Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Allentown, Pa. - A walk-off sacrifice fly in the 11th inning off the bat of Cody Overbeck lifted the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A/Philadelphia Phillies) to a 5-4 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees) on Sunday afternoon. The RailRiders tied the game in the ninth to send it to extras, but the sacrifice fly ensured a series victory for Lehigh Valley.
Things looked good for SWB early as it scored three times in the first. Addison Maruszak led off with a walk, and advanced to third on a double by Zoilo Almonte. One out later, Josh Bell walked to load bases. That set up Bobby Wilson, who blooped a single to center field to score Maruszak and Almonte. The inning was capped when Alberto Gonzalez doubled to left to drive home Bell.
Lehigh Valley got on the board in the fourth. Jermaine Mitchell led off with a dribbler back to the mound, but he reached on an error by SWB starter Ivan Nova. One out later, the rehabbing Carlos Ruiz singled to right field, and Darin Ruf followed with a base hit to drive home Mitchell. Ruiz later came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Overbeck.
The IronPigs tied the game in the seventh when Cody Asche hit his eighth home run of the season.
The Pigs poked in front with a run in the eighth. Mitchell doubled to right-center field, moved to third on a base hit by Cesar Hernandez, and then scored when Ruf hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
The RailRiders entered the top of the ninth down by a run, but leveled the game to send it to extras. Cody Grice hit a one-out triple, and scored when Almonte singled through the right side with the infield in.
The game remained tied until the 11th inning. Cameron Rupp led off with a four-pitch walk. Miguel Abreu was brought in to run for Rupp, and Hernandez followed with a walk of his own. SWB reliever Dellin Betances was ahead in the count on Asche, but hit him with a breaking ball to load the bases. Overbeck then skied a ball to deep center field, which was caught by Grice, but allowed Abreu to tag up and score the winning run.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had its chances, as it left 13 men on base, including the bases loaded in the 11th. The RailRiders went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position.
Cesar Jimenez (3-1) worked the 11th inning to get the win for Lehigh Valley.
Betances (4-4) was handed the loss, but did not concede a hit in the decisive 11th frame. Nova pitched into the seventh inning for the first time this season and allowed just one earned run without walking a batter.
The RailRiders return home to PNC Field to welcome in the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) for a short series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Monday, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:35 p.m. Caleb Cotham (2-3, 7.58) will get the starting nod for SWB in game one, while Graham Stoneburner (2-3, 4.72) will go in game two. Both contests will be seven innings, and game two will begin approximately 30 minutes after game one concludes.
