Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - Despite another great showing by Trevor Lubking on the mound, the Gary SouthShore RailCats (18-23) struggled to provide offensive help against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (17-22) in a 3-2 loss to open the series.
Goldeyes starter Eduard Reyes had the outing of his career, throwing eight innings of two-run baseball with four walks and eight strikeouts. Reyes tossed a no-hitter into the sixth.
Gary SouthShore leapt on top in the fourth after a Raymond Jones sac-fly to score Daniel Lingua who slid under the tag at home, despite not yet recording a hit against Reyes.
In the fifth, the fish tied things up with three bunts in the frame, highlighted by a RBI-bunt single from Kevin Lachance. The next inning, Max Murphy would race across the plate to score the leading run and give the Goldeyes a 2-1 lead.
Murphy led the charge with a 3-for-3 line plus a walk and scored two runs on the day in the win. He was one of two players on either team to record a multi-hit effort.
Just a half inning later, Jesus Marriaga would plate another to tie things up at two-a-piece on an RBI infield single. The sole hit of the day for the Colombian extended his hit streak to eleven games.
Lubking was in command the whole time he was on the bump. Yet, with two down in the eighth, Murphy recorded his third hit of the day and came around to score on a Kyle Martin single that was bobbled in center field. The run would go unearned.
The second straight start Lubking has taken into the eighth, the southpaw threw 7.2 innings, allowed three runs, two of which were earned, with eight hits, a walk and nine strikeouts.
Game two between the Gary SouthShore RailCats and Winnipeg Goldeyes is scheduled for tomorrow, July 3 at 6:10 p.m. at the Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.
