Revs Use Two-Out Lightning to Drill Ducks in Series Finale

September 16, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

Rommie Lewis fired eight strong innings and the York Revolution did all of its damage on Wednesday night with two outs, including a pair of big innings, drilling the Long Island Ducks 10-3 in the series rubber match at Santander Stadium. The Revs continue to pile up victories down the stretch, and will host the Somerset Patriots on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m., kicking off a four-game weekend series to close the 2015 season.

The Revs took control of Wednesday's game early, scoring six times in the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Boggs led off the rally with a double to left-center before Bryan Pounds reached on a walk to put two runners aboard. Ducks starter Joe Bircher struck out the next two batters, flirting with escaping unscathed. Down in the count 1-2, Nick Ferdinand came through with a clutch RBI single to right-center for the first run, opening the floodgates in doing so. James Simmons followed with a two-run double off the base of the fence in left-center to make it 3-0. Eric Patterson then ripped an RBI single up the middle, plating Simmons while advancing to second on a throwing error by center fielder Delta Cleary, Jr. Patterson then scored as Wilson Valdez roped an RBI double down the right field line. Andres Perez tacked on an 84th RBI to his league-leading season total with a base hit to center, expanding the lead to 6-0. Boggs reached on an infield single, his second hit of the inning, ending the night of Bircher (0-1) and capping a stretch of six consecutive hits, tying a season-high for the York offense.

Long Island slashed the lead in half in the third, taking advantage of a pair of York miscues. After back-to-back singles by Carlos Hughes and Fehlandt Lentini to lead off the inning, Cleary, Jr. launched a towering fly ball to left field that was lost in the twilight, landing on the warning track behind Ferdinand for a two-run double. One batter later, Elmer Reyes skied another high fly ball in left-center that Simmons lost sight of in the sky, landing for an RBI triple, bringing the Ducks within 6-3.

The Revs regained momentum, answering with a three-spot of their own in the very same inning. Ferdinand and Simmons singled to spark the rally with two outs, before Patterson yanked an RBI double to right. Two more runs scored on a throwing error by third baseman Cody Puckett after fielding a ground ball from Valdez, as the Revs built their lead back to six runs at 9-3.

Valdez blooped an RBI single to right with two outs in the fifth for the 10-3 lead.

Lewis (10-10) allowed just three runs over eight strong innings, and walked one while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts for the second straight start. Lewis knocked down a comebacker from Steve McQuail to end the fifth inning with the bases loaded, denying the Ducks in their only other threat, and beginning a stretch on which he retired 10 of his final 11 batters faced. The lefty threw a season-high 120 pitches, 83 of which were strikes, while taking the team lead with his 13th quality start.

Tony Pena capped the victory with three ground outs in a perfect ninth inning.

Notes: York's six-run inning marked the 15th time this season the Revs have scored five runs or more in one inning, with 10 of those 15 times occurring since August 7. The Revs scored double figures in a game for the ninth time, all since August 8. York has won four of five, nine of 12, and 10 of its last 14 overall. The Revs have also won five of their last six at home. The Revs tie a season-high at 11 games over .500, now 38-27 in the second half. The Revs are 32-19 since July 24 and 26-15 since August 5. The Revs won four of the season's final six meetings against the playoff-bound Ducks. Over the last four series, the Revs have won three series along with a rain-shortened split at Somerset. Despite York's winning ways, the Revs are eliminated from playoff contention after Lancaster defeated Southern Maryland on Wednesday evening. Lefty Frank Gailey (5-3, 3.08) starts Thursday's opener against the Patriots, opposite southpaw Kramer Sneed who makes his Atlantic League debut. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
