Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

(Bridgeport, CT- September 16, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (29-35, 55-79) defeated the Somerset Patriots (36-28, 86-48) 6-4 in seven innings in the opener of a day/night doubleheader at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon. Bridgeport picks up their 31st victory at home in 2015, and have now evened the series at a game apiece with the finale taking place later on this evening.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Freddy Flores picked up a no-decision in one inning of work, facing seven batters, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out one while surrendering a home run and a wild pitch and not issuing a walk. Somerset Starting Pitcher R.J. Seidel also did not factor in the game's final outcome, lasting three innings, giving up one run on two hits without registering a walk or a strikeout. Jimmy Patterson (2-2) earned the victory out of the bullpen with a scoreless inning, striking out two. Somerset reliever Connor Little (0-1) was tagged with the loss, tossing two innings of relief work, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out two and not walking a batter. All-Star Patrick Mincey shut the door in the seventh inning for his team-leading 25th save.

Somerset got on the board in the top half of the first inning off Flores, scoring three runs on four hits for the early 3-0 lead. Thomas Neal's run-scoring single plated Aharon Eggleston, who reached on an infield single with one out, and just three batters into the ballgame the visitors had a 1-0 edge. Matt Fields followed Neal with a booming two-run home run off the batter's eye in straightaway center field, and his third roundtripper overall gave Somerset a three run edge.

The Bluefish cut the deficit to 3-1 in the second off Seidel on a run-scoring double by Matt Burns, plating Wilson Batista after he lead off the frame with a bunt single. Bridgeport added three more runs in the home half of the fifth inning to take their first lead of the day 4-3 and never looked back. Bryan Sabatella drove home Luis Rodriguez with an RBI base knock to shave the Somerset lead to 3-2. Welington Dotel answered the bell next with a game-tying RBI double, scoring Matt Burns. Dotel extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive games, and now has a team-leading 68 runs batted in. Sabatella would score the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by CJ Retherford, and just like that the 'Fish were out in front.

Bridgeport came to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning in search of some insurance runs, and that is exactly what they got on back to back solo home runs to left field by Wilson Batista and Juan Martinez off Patriots reliever Anthony Collazo, giving the 'Fish a 6-3 cushion. Batista "touched 'em all" for the fourth time this season and third in a Bridgeport uniform, and the big fly for Martinez was his first in 2015. It was the six multi home run game on the campaign for Bridgeport, and their first since August 12th when Ethan Chapman and former Bluefish Bryant Nelson went yard in a 5-2 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Regency Furniture Stadium. Burns and Batista led the way for Bridgeport with a pair of hits each.

The Bluefish conclude their series with the Somerset Patriots at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday, September 16th in the nightcap of the doubleheader. First pitch in game two is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a George H.W. Bush Bobblehead to commemorate the 41st President of the United States and former Yale Baseball Player.
