
Garceau Struggles as Blue Crabs Fall to Lancaster

(Lancaster, PA September 15, 2015)--- It has been a tale of two halves for the Lancaster Barnstormers in the 2015 campaign. In the first half, Lancaster went 28-42. In the second half of play, it has been a complete night and day difference, winning their 42nd and 70th game of the season with their victory over Southern Maryland 9-5 on Tuesday evening.
RHP Shaun Garceau struggled once again, as he got roughed up for eight runs allowed on 10 hits in four innings of work. Shaun is now 1-4 since returning to the Blue Crabs and has allowed 26 earned runs in five starts.
After Southern Maryland scored two quick runs in the top of the first, the Barnstormers came right back in the bottom of the frame and plated seven runs. With Jerry Owens at third Zach Collier tripled to score Owens. Kent Matthes, and Lance Zawadzki drove in runs with singles that were soon followed by a Charlie Cutler RBI single. Two batters later Jerry Owens came back up to the plate and ripped a double to left center to score two more runs to complete the seven run inning.
Lancaster added a run in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to two RBI single by Tyler Bortnick. Tyler went 2-4 with two runs driven in.
Southern Maryland attempted to tack on runs in the top of the eighth on the comeback trail. Reggie Abercrombie ripped his second homerun as a Blue Crab over the wall in left. Later in the inning, Jovan Rosa scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Bryant Nelson. Keith Castillo singled to put two runners on, but RHP Scott Patterson struck out Grant Zawadzki, and Fred Lewis to end the Southern Maryland threat.
RHP Joe Gardner pitched seven innings for Lancaster in his start. Joe allowed all five of Southern Maryland's runs but picked up his ninth win of the season.
Lancaster out-hit Southern Maryland 15-11. Jerry Owens had a big night, going 5-5 in the leadoff spot with two RBIs and two runs scored. Lance Zawadzki, Charlie Cutler, and Kent Matthes each contributed with two hits apiece as well.
Offensively for Southern Maryland, Zach Wilson continues to hit as he went 3-5 with two RBIs, and Keith Castillo went 2-4 against his former team.
Southern Maryland is now 5-10 here in the month of September, and have yet to win a series this month. The Blue Crabs will try to salvage this series in Lancaster tomorrow night. The first pitch is set for 7:00. RHP Nate Reed (8-7, 3.67) will throw for Lancaster, and RHP Jon Leicester (3-1, 2.34) will start for Southern Maryland.
