York Revolution News Release
(New Britain, Ct.) - One day after smashing a season-high-tying four home runs, the York Revolution were held to a season-low three hits in a 3-2 setback to the New Britain Bees on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. Having lost the rubber match in the series, the Revs (17-14) will head home for Monday's off day, before opening a seven-game homestand on Tuesday night against Southern Maryland.
Bees starter Josh Zeid was the story early, striking out the first five hitters of the game, a Revs record for an opposing pitcher to start a contest. James Simmons then provided the first contact for the York offense, doing so in a big way on a solo home run to left, giving the Revs an early 1-0 lead.
York starter Kelvin De La Cruz stranded three in scoring position over the first two innings, and seemed to be settling in, having retired --eight straight before running into two-out trouble in the fourth. After a single and a hit batter kept the inning alive, Anthony Hewitt ripped an RBI single to left, tying the game at 1-1.
The Revs answered in the fifth as Josh Wilson worked a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out, and raced home on a wild pitch to put York back ahead 2-1.
De La Cruz was a pitch away from getting through five to qualify for a win, but again the Bees would rally with two outs in their half of the fifth. After Jovan Rosa legged out a potential inning-ending double play, Michael Crouse bounced a seeing-eye single up the middle. Jon Griffin followed with a walk to load the bases, and down in the count 1-2, Jonathan Roof (3-for-4) slapped a two-run single to center for his third hit in as many at-bats, giving New Britain the 3-2 lead.
Zeid (2-2) picked up the win, striking out seven and allowing two runs over six innings. The Bees bullpen of Jarret Leverett, Shawn Gilblair, and Craig Stem (seventh save) handled the final three innings in perfect fashion.
York's bullpen was also solid, as Mariel Checo recorded the final out of the fifth, preceding Ricardo Gomez, Michael Click, and Ty'Relle Harris who each tossed scoreless frames to maintain the one-run margin.
De La Cruz (3-3) suffered the loss, charged with three runs in 4.2 innings. He allowed ten base runners, eight of which reached with two outs. All three runs scored against him with two outs.
Notes: The Revs conclude the first half season series against the Bees with a 6-4 record, suffering their first series loss against New Britain. The two teams played 10 times in the season's first 31 games, and will not meet again until July 15. Click made his sixth appearance against New Britain, while Harris made his seventh. The previous record for consecutive strikeouts to start a game by a York offense was three, which occurred June 20, 2012 vs. Sugar Land and April 24, 2015 vs. Long Island. De La Cruz suffered a second straight loss despite having allowed just three runs in each defeat. York finishes its road trip with a 2-5 record, falling to 7-10 away from home. The Revs have dropped back-to-back series after winning four straight. York falls to 7-6 in one-run games. Simmons' home run was the Revs' league-leading 32nd of the season. The Revs return to PeoplesBank Park on Tuesday night where they are 10-4 on the season. York righty Jorge Martinez (1-2, 2.63) starts the opener against Southern Maryland at 6:30 p.m., opposite Blue Crabs righty Jon Leicester (2-2, 3.86). The homestand starts with Baseball Bingo presented by Colonial Manor and The Brunswick at Longstown. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
