Revs Surge Ahead Late to Secure Series Sweep

Waldorf, Md. - It once again took until the late innings, but the York Revolution offense awoke in a big way, scoring five times in the top of the seventh en route to a 6-3 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Sunday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Revs finish off their fifth sweep of the season and first on the road with the victory, while completing the best six-game road trip in franchise history with a 5-1 mark. The Revs return home to kick off a seven-game homestand on Monday night.

Trailing 1-0 heading to the seventh, the Revs were looking to solve Blue Crabs lefty Brian Burres who had struck out five straight batters and had whiffed nine total over six shutout innings.

The rally took shape as Kevin Rivers worked a leadoff walk to begin the seventh, and Michael Rockett blooped a base hit to center. Bryan Pounds then flied to right, advancing Rivers to third as Burres' afternoon came to an end after 124 pitches. Reliever Navery Moore issued a wild pitch that moved Rockett to second, and with the infield halfway in, Keith Castillo laced a two-run double down the right field line, giving the Revs a 2-1 lead. Josh Wilson and Jared Mitchell then took walks to load the bases, and Brandon Chaves flared a base hit over third to bring home a run. Joel Guzman was then drilled in the back on the first pitch, forcing in another run on his league-leading 70th RBI of the season. Moore was lifted in favor of righty Ian Marshall who retired Andres Perez on a pop up to short, but with shortstop Eric Garcia backpedaling to make the catch, Mitchell tagged and sprinted home, turning it into a sac fly and a 5-1 lead. By taking the lead in the seventh, it marked the earliest in the three-game series that the Revs took the lead, having scored their decisive runs late in all three contests.

The Blue Crabs immediately threatened in the bottom of the seventh as singles from Angel Flores and Antoan Richardson preceded a two-run double to left-center by Garcia, slicing the lead to 5-3. York reliever Scott Rice induced a pair of ground outs, and after a pair of walks, fanned Jamar Walton to leave the bases loaded.

The Revs recouped one of those runs in the top of the eighth as Rockett led off with a double off the left field fence, took third on a Pounds single, and scored on a sac fly to center by Castillo who led York with three RBI on the day.

Jose Arredondo logged his eighth consecutive scoreless outing with a perfect eighth, and Ricardo Gomez worked around a leadoff single by Garcia in the ninth to notch his second save of the year.

York starter James Simmons (9-4) earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings. Two of his three hits allowed were bloops, including an RBI single to shallow left-center by Gary Brown in the bottom of the fifth.

The Revs defense came up huge all day. Chaves made a great sliding stop on a grounder in shallow right to rob Bryant Nelson of a potential RBI single, ending the third. Rockett then made a pair of fantastic running grabs deep in each gap on consecutive pitches for the first two outs of the fourth. Rivers finished the fifth inning with a great running grab near the left field corner to strand two runners.

Burres (8-6) took the loss for Southern Maryland, despite allowing just two earned runs on four hits in 6.1 innings.

Notes: The Revs had previously totaled four wins on a six-game road trip on seven occasions. The sweep is their first on the road since May 5-7, 2015 at Lancaster. It is their first at Southern Maryland since August 6-8, 2013. The Revs have won five straight head-to-head against Southern Maryland, improving to 12-4 in the season series, and closing the season slate at Regency Furniture Stadium with a 7-3 mark. The Revs nab their 35th comeback win of the year, just one shy of tying a club record set in 2008 and 2014. It is the 11th win of the season for the Revs when heading to the seventh inning behind. York is 15 games over .500 (57-42) for the first time since closing the 2014 season at 16 games above the .500 mark. The Revs have won six of seven overall, nine of their last 12, and are now 16-6 since the All-Star Break. Simmons won both the first and last games of the road trip, and ranks second in the league in victories, just two off the league lead. The runs in the seventh snapped a 19.2-inning scoreless streak for the York bullpen dating to last Sunday. The fifth inning run ended a season-best 18-inning scoreless streak for the Revs pitching staff. Rockett (3-for-4) picked up his fifth multi-hit game and fourth game of three hits in the last seven contests; he is now 15-for-29 in those seven games, batting .517. York righty Ty'Relle Harris (2-4, 4.44) starts Monday's opener against New Britain at 6:30 p.m. The Revs are celebrating National Night Out presented by UPMC for You.
