Bridgeport Bluefish News Release

Bridgeport, CT- - The Bridgeport Bluefish (17-13, 47-53) defeated the Long Island Ducks (16-12, 56-42) 3-1 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon to take the rubber game of the three game weekend series in the Magic City. Bridgeport improves to 3-3 on their current season long nine game homestand, and move back into a First Place tie with Long Island in the Second Half of the Liberty Division Standings.

Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Jonathan Albaladejo (11-4) earned the win, pitching seven dominating innings, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out nine while not issuing a walk and tossing a pair of wild pitches and hitting a batter. The Liberty Division All-Star adds to his Atlantic League in wins and registers his team-leading 11th quality start. In the 20 appearances made by Albaladejo this year, Bridgeport has an overall record of 15-5, a .750 winning percentage. Long Island Starting Pitcher John Brownell (8-4) suffered the complete-game loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits in eight innings of work, walking one and striking out five. The right-hander goes the distance for the league-leading fourth time on the campaign. Jose Veras retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out a pair to record his team-best ninth save of the season.

The much anticipated pitcher's duel was as advertised with each starter matching zeroes through the first four innings. Bridgeport would strike first against Brownell in the home half of the fifth inning on a one-out run-scoring double off the bat of Luis Nunez, plating Angelys Nina with the game's first run after he reached base right before Nunez with an infield single. The Bluefish would make it 2-0 in their favor in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Jose Gil drove home Welington Dotel with a two-out RBI single after Dotel doubled with one man out. The base knock for Gil was the first for Bridgeport with a runner in scoring position in nine at-bats and it doubled the lead for the home team.

Long Island would get on the board for the first time in the ballgame against Albaladejo in the top half of the eighth inning to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. Fehlandt Lentini began the rally with his second double in as many plate appearances, and would advance to third on a wild pitch. Lentini then hustled down the line after Delta Cleary Jr. was struck out but reached base on the second wild pitch of the inning thrown by Albaladejo that got past his battery mate Gil. Albaladejo would be lifted for David Carpenter, and Cody Puckett greeted him rudely with a single to left field, putting the Ducks in business. With the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run at first base, Carpenter induced Ruben Gotay to lace a screaming line drive to the right side that was caught by first baseman Sean Burroughs, who had Puckett hung out to dry as he stepped on the bag for the double play. Tyler Colvin then struck out looking as Carpenter was able to preserve the one-run cushion.

Looking for insurance, the 'Fish got exactly that in the bottom of the eighth inning. Endy Chavez led off with an infield single to get things started. A sacrifice bunt by Dotel moved Chavez to second base. With two men out, Burroughs belted an opposite-field RBI double to left center, scoring Chavez as Bridgeport regained a two-run cushion at 3-1. Veras came on to shut the door in the ninth inning, completing a dominating performance by the Bridgeport bullpen in the three-game set, as they did not allow a run in 11 innings pitched in the entire series against a very potent Long Island lineup, striking out 14 batters in the process. Chavez led the way for the Bluefish with two base knocks, registering his 23rd multi-hit game of the 2016 season. Photo provided courtesy of Dave Csordas.
