(Bridgewater, NJ) - The York Revolution salvaged the finale of their three-game series, capping a six-game road trip with a 5-3 victory over the Somerset Patriots on Thursday evening in front of 4,902 fans at TD Bank Ballpark. The Revs (30-23) maintain their two-game lead in the Freedom Division over Sugar Land, while extending their lead to three games over Lancaster with 17 games remaining in the season's first half. York returns home for a six-game homestand beginning Friday night against Bridgeport at 6:30 p.m.
Somerset struck first as Eric Farris connected on a two-run homer down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning, spotting the Patriots a 2-0 lead two batters in. That came in support of starter Shaun Garceau who was perfect through his first three frames.
The Revs pulled even in the fourth. Isaias Tejeda drove a leadoff double to deep left-center, extending his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. One batter later, Joel Guzman tattooed a mammoth two-run homer to left, his ninth of the year, tying the score at 2-2.
The Revs grabbed the lead an inning later. Josh Wilson kept the inning alive with a double down the third base line with two outs. Wilson then took off on a steal attempt of third while Michael Rockett dropped down a bunt single. Wilson rounded third, and broke for the plate as third baseman Mycal Jones mishandled his barehanded attempt, allowing Wilson to score without a play for a 3-2 lead.
Garceau's only two walks came in the top of the seventh as Alfredo Marte and Wilson both reached base on free passes, setting the table for Rockett who nailed a two-run double to deep left with two outs in the inning, chasing Garceau and extending the lead to 5-2.
Somerset inched within 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh as Trayvon Robinson scored on a wild pitch, but second baseman Andres Perez made a slick play to nip Vinny Zarrillo at first on a slow chopper, stranding a runner at third to maintain the two-run advantage.
Ricardo Gomez was perfect in the eighth, and Mike DeMark was dominant in the ninth, striking out all three batters for his 17th save.
Five Revolution pitchers combined to hold the Patriots to just three hits. Starter Frank Gailey worked a solid four innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on just two hits. Mariel Checo fired a scoreless fifth and sixth before being charged with an inherited run after a leadoff walk in the seventh. Scott Rice handled all three outs in the seventh, surrendering just a single.
Notes: DeMark's 17 saves lead the league, and tie a club record for most saves in a half, matching Rommie Lewis' first half total from 2014. DeMark now has 21 saves in his Revs career, one shy of tying Juan Rincon for fourth on the franchise's all-time list. Of York's six hits, four went for extra bases. The Revs finish 2-4 on the road trip, winning the finale to avoid sweeps in both Sugar Land and Somerset. York finishes the first half series against the Patriots with a 4-6 record, winning for the first time in six tries at TD Bank Ballpark. York righty James Simmons (4-2, 3.72) starts Friday's opener against Bridgeport lefty Jimmy Patterson (1-1, 3.42) at 6:30 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK app beginning at 6:10 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call. The first 1,500 fans receive a Bruce Arians Gnome Giveaway as part of the Celebrate York Series presented by Memorial Hospital. It is also Boy Scout Night with a postgame on-field camp out and sleepover. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
