Blue Crabs Return The Favor With One-Run Victory Over Bluefish
June 16, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Waldorf, MD) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (21-31) were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (19-31) 4-3 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Wednesday night to even up the three game midweek series at a victory apiece. Bridgeport has their four-game winning streak snapped as they drop to 1-1 on their current six game, two-city road trip.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Mike Antonini (3-6) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in five and one-third innings of work, walking one while striking out two and surrendering a home run. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Daryl Thompson (2-4) earned the victory after tossing seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, striking out two and giving up two home runs. Cody Eppley retired all three batters he faced in the top half of the ninth inning, striking out one to notch his tenth save of the season, fifth most in the Atlantic League.
Bridgeport took the lead just three batters into the game when Welington Dotel launched an opposite field solo home run to right against Thompson, his first roundtripper of the season as Bridgeport went ahead 1-0. Southern Maryland would answer right back in the bottom of the frame as Angel Sanchez crossed the plate with the tying-run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Wilson, and just like that the game was all square at a run apiece. The Blue Crabs took their first lead of the evening in the home half of the second when Angel Flores lifted a two-run home run off Antonini just over the Grille Number 13 Mini Monster in left field and Southern Maryland took a 3-1 advantage.
Bridgeport would cut the deficit in half in the top of the third inning off Thompson when Endy Chavez plated Luis Hernandez with a run-scoring double as the 'Fish were within a run at 3-2. Bridgeport would tie the contest up at three in the top half of the fourth when Jonathan Galvez belted a solo home run to left center on the first pitch thrown by Thompson. The right hander has now allowed a season-high eleven big flies, with seven of them coming at the hands of the Bluefish. The contest remained deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth when the Blue Crabs regained the lead for good. Jamar Walton led off the rally with a bunt single, and Kuan-Jen Chen followed with a base knock of his own to put runners at first and second with nobody out. After an Angel Flores sacrifice bunt, the go-ahead run was only 90 feet away. Joe Kuzia came on in relief for Antonini inheriting a pair of runners, and with the infield in, D'Arby Myers hit a ground ball to Luis Hernandez at shortstop, who fired home to Rossmel Perez and the Bridgeport backstop slapped the tag on Walton for out number two. Kuzia could not close the door as he bounced a wild pitch away from Perez with the number nine hitter Gary Brown at the plate, and Chen scampered down the line from third with the lead run as Southern Maryland was back on top 4-3. Eppley did the rest as the Blue Crabs improved to 8-7 in one-run contests in 2016. Dotel led the offensive attack for Bridgeport with three hits.
