York Revolution News Release

(Central Islip, NY) - The York Revolution threatened but were unable to dig all the way back from an early hole, dropping their second straight at Long Island, 8-5 in front of 4,390 fans at Bethpage Ballpark on Wednesday night. The first-place Revs (37-29) lead the Freedom Division by two games with four remaining in the first half, and lower their magic number to three to clinch a playoff berth which could occur as early as Thursday night. A York win and losses by both Sugar Land and Lancaster would give the Revs the first half title, as Lancaster would be eliminated outright, and Sugar Land would be eliminated by York clinching the second tiebreaker of best division record. The Revs will look to finish with a series split and an even record on their season-long eight-game road trip, before returning home to close the first half this weekend against Lancaster.

York jumped ahead in the top of the second as Andres Perez nailed a line drive home run down the left field line for a 1-0 lead. The home run is the 58th of Perez' Revolution career, just one shy of tying Chris Nowak (2011-12) for the franchise's all-time record.

Revs starter Tony Pena was solid early, inducing double plays to end the first and second innings before a 1-2-3 third. The righty ran into trouble in the fourth, however, as the Ducks batted around to take a 4-1 lead. Cody Puckett's bloop single tied the score before Dan Lyons belted an RBI double off the fence in left-center for Long Island's fourth consecutive hit with one out. With two outs in the inning, Mike Dowd rapped a two-run single to right-center to punctuate the outburst.

York got one back in the fifth as Josh Wilson and Salvador Paniagua led off with singles, and Brandon Chaves ripped a one-out single up the middle to plate Wilson, bringing the Revs within 4-2.

That was all that Ducks starter Bruce Kern (2-1) allowed, however, working seven innings to pick up the win.

Fehlandt Lentini drove in all four of Long Island's insurance runs to seemingly put the game on ice. Lentini capped a two-out rally in the sixth with a broken-bat two-run bloop single to right-center, then drilled a two-run triple to the gap in left-center in the eighth as Long Island's lead grew to 8-2.

The Revs missed a chance to cut into the deficit in the top of the eighth. Michael Burgess was hit by a pitch and Perez smashed a double down the third base line to put two in scoring position, but reliever Patrick Crider induced a ground out and righty Frank DeJiulio, Jr. entered to record a pair of pop outs to squelch the threat.

Undeterred, the Revs took aim at a massive comeback in the ninth, scoring three times and bringing the tying run to the plate.

Paniagua started things by working a leadoff walk from reliever Eury De La Rosa, and Travis Witherspoon legged out an infield single. Chaves walked to load the bases, and Joel Guzman ripped a two-run single up the middle, cutting the margin to 8-4 and taking over the league lead with 46 RBI. With one out, Perez (4-for-5) smacked an RBI single to left, bringing York within 8-5 and sending the tying run to the plate, but De La Rosa bounced back with a fly out and a strike out to close the contest.

Pena (5-3) suffered the loss, charged with a season-high six runs on 12 hits over his six innings of work.

Notes: With York and Sugar Land holding 5-5 records head-to-head in the first half, the second tiebreaker is divisional record; York is 14-13 vs. the Freedom Division, while Sugar Land is 13-16 after a loss at Southern Maryland on Wednesday night. A York win and a Sugar Land loss on Thursday would clinch at least a first place tie for York, while a Sugar Land loss at Southern Maryland would clinch the divisional tiebreaker in York's favor. A York win and a Lancaster loss would also eliminate the Barnstormers from first half contention. Witherspoon (2-for-5) has hit safely in 11 of his first 13 games with York. Perez' four-hit game is a season-best and ties a season-high for a Revs batter. He became the first in Revs history to go over 1,800 at-bats in Wednesday's game (1,801). Luis Perdomo worked a scoreless seventh out of the Revs bullpen, his fifth straight scoreless outing without allowing a hit. York and Long Island are now 90-90 in the all-time regular season series. The Ducks (37-29) take over sole possession of first place in the Liberty Division by one game. York righty Ty'Relle Harris (2-2, 3.78) starts Thursday's game opposite Ducks lefty Jack Snodgrass (5-5, 3.46) with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
