Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Lancaster, PA) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (27-38) were defeated by the Lancaster Barnstormers (33-31) 5-3 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Tuesday night and the Barnstormers have now taken the first two games of the four-game series. Lancaster wins their fourth straight game and is now within three and a half games of their in-state rival York Revolution for first place in the First Half of the Freedom Division Standings. Bridgeport falls to 0-2 on their current seven-game, two state road trip and have now lost five consecutive games overall.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher D.J. Mitchell registered a no-decision in five innings of work, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking three, striking out five while hitting a batter and throwing a team-high three wild pitches. Lancaster Starting Pitcher Bryan Evans also did not factor in the game's final outcome, lasting six innings, surrendering two runs on five hits, striking out six and not issuing a free pass. Eric Niesen (2-3) was tagged with the loss out of the Bluefish bullpen, giving up two runs on two hits, striking out two and allowing a home run in an inning of work. Al Yevoli (1-2) collected the win out of the bullpen for the Barnstormers, surrendering a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning of scoreless baseball. Cory Burns gave up a hit in four batters faced in the top half of the ninth inning to record his 13th save of the season.
Lancaster got on the board first in the home half of inning number one against Mitchell on a pair of back-to-back sacrifice flies by Josh Whitaker and Josh Bell, plating Blake Gailen and Kevin Ahrens to give the Barnstormers the early 2-0 lead. The home team made it 3-0 in their favor in the bottom of the second again against Mitchell as Gailen drove home Charlie Cutler with a two-out RBI double and Lancaster enjoyed their largest lead of the evening at three runs. Bridgeport would get on the scoreboard for the first time against Evans in the top half of the fifth inning on a two-out, two run double down the third base line by Angelys Nina, scoring Josh Vitters and Adron Chambers who each singled earlier in the frame, and all of a sudden we had a one-run ballgame at 3-2.
The Bluefish would storm all the way back to even up the game at three in the top half of the seventh inning as Rossmel Perez reached on a fielding error by Lancaster first baseman K.C. Hobson with two out, allowing Vitters to cross the plate with the tying run after he began the rally with a leadoff double. With Perez at second and Nina at first, Luis Hernandez proceeded to lace a clean single to left center field, and while Perez tried to score the lead run, Nina attempted to go from first to third but was gunned down by centerfielder Caleb Gindl as Bell slapped the tag on Nina before Perez crossed the plate to end the inning and the game remained deadlocked at 3-3. Lancaster would regain the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning as a two-run home run to right centerfield by Sean Halton against Niesen gave the Barnstormers a 5-3 cushion, one they would never relinquish as Burns closed the door on any potential Bridgeport comeback for his second save in as many nights. Vitters, Chambers, Nina, and Endy Chavez led the way for the Bluefish with a pair of hits each. Vitters now has 14 multi-hit games on the season, with Chavez right behind him with 13 overall.
