New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution defender and Cranston, R.I., native Michael Parkhurst has been invited to join the U.S. Men's National Team for its upcoming training camp, which will be conducted from Nov. 12-15 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. Parkhurst is among the 19 players called into camp by head coach Bob Bradley in advance of the team's 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Guatemala on Nov. 19, which will also take place at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Parkhurst, who was recently honored with Major League Soccer's Fair Play Award for the second consecutive season, has made three appearances for the U.S. National Team. The 24-year-old center back most recently appeared for the full national team on Jan. 20, 2008, playing the second half of the U.S.' 2-0 victory against Sweden.
A three-time MLS All-Star and the 2007 MLS Defender of the Year, Parkhurst most recently represented his country at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as he was named as one of three "overage" players on Under-23 head coach Peter Nowak's 18-man roster. Parkhurst played all 270 minutes as the U.S. went 1-1-1 in group play and did not qualify for the medal round.
The 19-man group assembling in Commerce City is comprised mainly of domestic-based players, with all but three of the group coming from Major League Soccer. Goalkeepers Troy Perkins (Valerenga IF, Norway) and Matt Pickens (out of contract) and defender Clarence Goodson (IK Start, Norway) are the only players called to camp not currently playing for an MLS club.
The U.S. will host Guatemala in the last CONCACAF Semifinal Round qualifier on Wednesday, Nov. 19, with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and Galavision. The Americans have already secured their spot in the final round of qualifying along with Costa Rica and El Salvador, with the remaining three teams to be decided on the final match-day. Guatemala currently sits three points behind Trinidad and Tobago in Group 1 and must win to have any hope of advancing to the next round.
On Nov. 16, Bradley will name his final training camp roster for the Guatemala match, with the group expected to consist of some players from the current camp as well as additional players from Europe and the clubs which are eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs this week.
