FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - New England Revolution forward Adam Cristman will undergo a season-ending hallux rigidus correction on his right big toe on Thursday, Sept. 4. George Theodore, M.D. will perform the surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Cristman, 23, will miss the remainder of the 2008 season while he rehabilitates after surgery. He originally sprained his right big toe late in the 2007 season, and then re-aggravated the injury during a call-up to the U.S. Under-23 team in January 2008. He has played all season with the injury.
"Adam has been in pain for much of the season, but played through it as we had other injuries to our team," Revolution Vice President of Player Personnel Michael Burns said. "His pain became so severe that Adam could not continue to play any longer. We are all hopeful this surgery will rectify the problem and Adam can concentrate on his rehabilitation process to prepare for the 2009 season."
Cristman is currently tied for the team lead in goals with six, and added one assist in 18 appearances in MLS regular-season games. Overall, Cristman made 21 appearances in all competitions, also including U.S. Open Cup and SuperLiga 2008. In 2007, he was one of three finalists for the MLS rookie of the year award.
The Revolution (11-6-5, 38 pts.) currently sits second in the MLS Eastern Conference and returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 6, when the team travels to face the MLS-leading Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. at Crew Stadium. TV38 will televise the game live, while the WEEI Radio Network will also carry the game between the top two teams in MLS.
