New England Revolution News Release
Foxborough, Mass. - The New England Revolution announced today that former Revs defender and team captain Mike Burns has been named to the position of Director of Soccer for the club. He replaces Technical Director Joe Cummings - who is leaving the club by his own choice - effective today.
"It's a pleasure to welcome Mike back to the Revolution," said Sunil Gulati, President of Kraft Soccer. "Mike will bring the same rigor and professionalism to the front office as he did to the playing field."
A true local soccer hero, Burns was born and raised in Marlboro, Mass. He was the Massachusetts High School Player of the Year in 1987 following his senior season at Marlboro High School. After a standout career at Hartwick College (1988-91), Burns became a regular for the U.S. National Team, earning 75 caps and starting two games for the U.S. in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He was allocated to the Revolution in 1995 at the inception of MLS and he played for and captained New England from 1996-2000, before finishing his playing career with the San Jose Earthquakes and the Kansas City Wizards. Burns also played for Viborg in the Super League in Denmark in 1995. He lives in the suburbs west of Boston with his wife and two children.
"This is an exciting new challenge for me," said Burns. "I look forward to returning to Foxborough and to working with the Revolution technical staff."
Cummings leaves the club after his second administrative stint with the team. "The time was right," said Cummings, who has served the Revolution in several capacities from 1996-99 and 2004-05. "I leave the team's technical administration in capable hands and move on to face new challenges. I wish everyone in Foxborough well and look forward to maintaining the many strong relationships I have at the club."
"Mike replaces a first-class soccer man in Joe Cummings," said Gulati. "The Revolution wishes Joe only the very best in his new endeavors."
The Revolution's next home game is at 7:30 p.m. on April 30 against CD Chivas USA. For ticket information, please call 1-877-GET-REVS.
