New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution open the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Quarterfinals against LIGA MX side and seven-time continental champion Club América on Tuesday, April 2. The first-ever meeting between the two sides kicks off at 9:00 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium and airs nationally in the United States on FOX Sports 1 (English) and TUDN (Spanish). Listen locally on the radio in Portuguese on 1260 AM "Nossa Radio USA".
Fresh off a bye week from MLS play, New England enters its second Concacaf Champions Cup Quarterfinals in the last three years to the following a 5-1 aggregate victory over Costa Rican side LD Alajuelense in the Round of 16. The Revolution dominated the first leg in Foxborough on March 6, with forward Tomás Chancalay bagging a brace as part of a 4-0 victory. In the return fixture on March 14 in Costa Rica, New England held its nerve in a 1-1 draw to secure a series victory. After Alajuelense opened the scoring in the fourth minute, the Revolution settled in and limited the hosts for the remainder of the contest. Giacomo Vrioni's 80th-minute equalizer sealed the result for New England.
Through four matches in the continental tournament, New England is unbeaten (3-0-1) and has outscored its Champions Cup opponents by an 9-1 margin. With Chancalay's two-goal performance, the 25-year-old now has four tallies in the competition, tied for the tournament lead. Including MLS play, the Argentinian striker has recorded three two-goal performances since joining New England last August. Chancalay, midfielder Esmir Bajraktarević, and defender Jonathan Mensah were all selected to the Round of 16 Best XI for their efforts in both legs. Goalkeeper Henrich Ravas was the backstop in goal for New England for all four matches, totaling 11 saves.
New England is still seeking its first regular-season victory of 2024, earning a 1-1 draw at home against Chicago Fire FC in its most recent fixture. Nacho Gil tallied his first career MLS goal, and second across all competitions this season, heading home an equalizer late into first-half stoppage time. Goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. made his season debut, with Ravas on international duty, making just one save as the Revolution defense limited Chicago for much of the rain-soaked afternoon.
Tuesday's contest will mark the first meeting between New England and LIGA MX giants Club América. The Revolution hold a 9-2-3 all-time record against LIGA MX sides across fixtures in Concacaf Champions Cup, Leagues Cup, and the now-defunct North American SuperLiga. In the inaugural Leagues Cup 2023, the Revolution went 1-0-2 against Mexican opponents, including a 5-1 victory over Atlético de San Luis. New England has faced just one LIGA MX side in Champions Cup play, falling on penalties in the 2022 quarterfinal round to Pumas UNAM.
Club América, currently first in the LIGA MX 2024 Clausura table with an 8-1-4 record, advanced past CD Chivas de Guadalajara, 5-3 on aggregate, in the Round of 16. Las Aguilas took command of the series with a 3-0 victory on the road in the first leg, before battling in a 3-2 defeat in the home leg at Estadio Azteca. Mexico international forward Henry Martín, with four goals in 2024 Clausura play to date, and former MLS and Mexican National Team midfielder Jonathan dos Santos highlight a star-studded roster for Club América.
