FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Major League Soccer announced today that New England Revolution forward/midfielder Pat Noonan has been named Player of the Week for Week 24 (September 8-13) of the 2003 MLS season. Noonan struck for two goals in a 2-1 Revolution victory over the MetroStars at Giants Stadium in E. Rutherford, NJ on Saturday. It was Noonan's first career multiple-goal game. The Revs improved to 7-9-8 on the season with the victory. New England has won two of their last three matches and are in a tight race for a postseason berth with the Columbus Crew, D.C. United and the MetroStars of MLS's Eastern Conference.

The Revs took an early lead Saturday night in the 11th minute of the game when Noonan scored his fourth goal of the season and second in as many contests. After a foul on José Cancela, Shalrie Joseph slotted a quick free kick from the left flank that found Noonan inside the MetroStars box. Noonan collected the ball and made a cutback move past Craig Ziadie before hitting a right-footed shot which deflected off Steve Jolley and beat MetroStars keeper Jonny Walker to give the Revs a 1-0 lead.

Noonan doubled the Revs lead, against the run of play, in the second half with a right-footed rocket shot past Walker. The Revs broke on a counterattack and Cancela sent a cross-field pass to Noonan, who settled and then cut inside before hitting his shot from 20 yards out for his fifth goal of the year and second of the game. Noonan has scored three goals in two games against the MetroStars this season.

This is the second week in the last three that a Revolution player has claimed the league's top weekly honors; striker Chris Brown was selected Player of the Week for Week 22 after scoring a hat trick in the Revs' 5-1 home victory over the Chicago Fire on August 30. Earlier this season Taylor Twellman (Week 7) and Brian Kamler (Week 8) were named Player of the Week in consecutive weeks.

The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected every week throughout the MLS season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).
