FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution claimed their second straight home win, defeating Toronto FC 3-1 on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. Charlie Davies scored twice and Lee Nguyen converted a penalty kick late in the first half to lead the Revs to their best offensive output in more than three months. Toronto FC, who got a late goal from Jonathan Osorio, played the final 51 minutes with just 10 men after Jozy Altidore was sent off late in the first half.
The Revs took the lead in the 35th minute, with Davies scoring his first of the game and his first since June 21. Chris Tierney played a free kick to Kelyn Rowe inside the area and the New England midfielder's first touch found Davies sliding in at the near post in front of a pair of Toronto FC defenders to prod his shot past TFC goalkeeper Joe Bendik to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Revs.
Toronto were reduced to 10 men four minutes later, when captain Jozy Altidore was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Revs captain Jose Goncalves. Playing up a man, New England doubled its lead just before halftime with Nguyen scoring his third goal in as many games with a 44th-minute penalty kick. Rowe earned the spot kick after he was dragged down by Toronto FC defender Damien Perquis while trying to get on the end of another Tierney free kick. Nguyen stepped up and converted the penalty for his fifth goal of the season, sending the Revs into the break with a 2-0 lead.
New England continued to push forward after the break and scored a third in the 62nd minute when Davies scored his second of the game. Tierney was once again at the center of the Revolution goal, curling a free kick into the center of the box from the right wing. Toronto's Benoit Cheyrou got the first touch to the ball but could only deflect it as far as Davies, who finished from close range for his team-leading ninth goal of the season. That was Davies' first multi-goal game in MLS since Sept. 10, 2011 and his first-ever in the regular season as a member of the Revolution.
Toronto pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, when Marky Delgado got free down the right and pulled the ball back for Jonathan Osorio, who hit a low shot past Bobby Shuttleworth to make the score 3-1, which is how the game would finish. Moments after that goal, Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones came on in place of Daigo Kobayashi for his first appearance since May 31.
