New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution (0-3-0; 0 pts.) are back at home to host FC Cincinnati (1-0-2; 5 pts.) on Sunday, March 17 for a 2:00 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium. Sunday's match and every MLS game this weekend is available to watch FREE on Apple TV in English and Spanish. Listen to the Revolution's local radio calls on 98.5 The Sports Hub, with Brad Feldman and Clyde Simms in the booth, and on 1260 AM "Nossa Radio USA" in Portuguese.
New England, entering the first match of a three-game homestand in MLS play, welcomes the reigning Supporters' Shield winner to Foxborough for the first of two meetings between the Eastern Conference rivals in 2024. The Revolution have battled the Orange and Blue to three straight draws, including both encounters in 2023, and lead the all-time series 4-1-3. Revolution Head Coach Caleb Porter has registered points in nine of his 10 games coached against Cincinnati, holding a 5-1-4 career mark. On the other sideline, FC Cincinnati Head Coach Pat Noonan, the 2023 MLS Coach of the Year who played five seasons with the Revolution from 2003-07, enters his third season guiding the Orange-and-Blue.
Sunday's match features two of the league's top playmakers and two former MLS MVPs in New England's Carles Gil and FC Cincinnati's Luciano Acosta. Gil, the 2021 MLS MVP, has netted two goals in three MLS games this season. His next goal will make the Spaniard only the fifth player in club history with 40 goals and 40 assists across all competitions. Acosta, named the MLS MVP last season, led FC Cincinnati to the Supporters' Shield with 17 goals and 14 assists in 2023. Both Gil and Acosta have reached double-digit assists in each of the last three seasons.
Both teams face short windows to prepare for Sunday's pivotal early season match after playing on the road in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup on Thursday. The Revolution collected a 1-1 draw against Liga Deportiva Alajuelense in Costa Rica on Thursday, advancing to the Quarterfinal Round with a 5-1 aggregate win. New England's defense has hit a rhythm in the tournament, allowing only one goal in 360 minutes of Champions Cup action. Three New England players earned selections to the Concacaf Best XI for the Round of 16: defender Jonathan Mensah, midfielder Esmir Bajraktarević, and forward Tomas Chancalay, who has four goals in seven overall appearances this year.
Forward Giacomo Vrioni provided the scoring for New England in Thursday's draw, opening his 2024 account on an assist from Bajraktarević. Vrioni looks to score his first MLS goal of the season to add to his one tally and two assists in the Champions Cup. Bajraktarević has reached the scoresheet in three consecutive matches in all competitions, including his first MLS assist in last weekend's match at Atlanta United, and has played in all seven games for New England open the campaign. After Sunday's match, Bajraktarević (United States Men's Olympic Team) will be one of three Revolution players heading out on international duty, along with fellow Homegrown Noel Buck (England Under-19's) and goalkeeper Henrich Ravas (Slovakia).
