Revamped FireAntz Split Two
January 3, 2005 - SPHL (SPHL)
Fayetteville Marksmen News Release
[Fayetteville, N.C.] âThe Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) completed a week in which they acquired 6 new players by splitting a pair of games over the weekend.
Friday December 31st (vs. Asheville):
The FireAntz were looking to close out 2004 in a big way and that's exactly what they did. After a brief hiccup at the 2:34 mark of the first period when Dan Beland scored for the Aces, the FireAntz dominated the contest.
Steve Roberts got the ball rolling at the 4:01 mark of the first period, his 14th of the season on the power play. Then at 11:02 newly acquired Tyler Perry batted a puck out of the air and past goaltender Ryan Person for his 1st as a FireAnt and 8th of the season. Josh Welter closed out the scoring in the first period wristing home a tough-angled shot from the left circle, the third power play goal of the period. Welter had 4 points on the night (1G, 3A.)
In the second period there would only be one goal but it was an exciting one for the crowd of 2,612 at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville. After serving an elbowing minor, fan-favorite Caleb Moffat streaked out of the penalty box and scored on a breakaway. It was his second of the season and gave the FireAntz a 4-1 lead going in to the 3rd period.
The FireAntz ended any hopes of an Aces comeback just 38 seconds in, on a goal by Paul Vincent, his 2nd of the year. Newcomer Josh Fey closed out the scoring at the 6:00 mark, netting his first goal as a FireAnt. Goaltender Chad Collins was superb in net, as usual, blocking 34 of the 35 shots he faced.
The FireAntz outshot Asheville 48-35.
FireAntz 10-12 on the season, (1-3 vs. Asheville.)
Saturday January 1st (at Jacksonville): In the first matchup between the two teams since the blockbuster trade on December 26th the FireAntz traveled to Jacksonville to take on the Barracudas.
In the 1st period former FireAnt Brent Rumble scored at 6:11 after pouncing on a turnover in the FireAntz zone and beating goaltender Chad Collins. That would be the only goal of the period despite 16 shots by the Barracudas.
Steve Roberts answered quickly in the 2nd period, only 34 seconds in, to tie the game at 1. The goal was Roberts' 15th of the season. Jason Silverthorn got the go-ahead goal for the Barracudas at 16:55 and it would turn out to be the game-winner.
The FireAntz took 15 shots on goalie Randy Hevey in the 3rd period but he turned them all aside and Jacksonville held on for the 2-1 victory.
The Barracudas outshot the FireAntz 38-30.
FireAntz 10-13 on the season, (2-2 vs. Jacksonville.)
