Resilient Spitfires Comeback to Win 7-6 in a Shootout over Flint
November 21, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires were absolutely resilient in Sunday's matinee matchup with the firebirds.
In the first period it was a back and forth game just like Saturday night but the Firebirds broke through first. As a Flint powerplay expired Othmann scored his 11th on the season off a rebound in front when beat Tovell. That was the lone goal in the first period, and the Spitfires outshot the Firebirds 16-12 through the first 20 minutes.
In the 2nd period the Firebirds capitalized on 2 powerplay goals both scored by Othmann to give him the hat-trick just less than 25 minutes into the game. Tag Bertuzzi scored his 2nd and third goals on the season and Flint took a commanding 5-1 lead just over halfway through the game. 1 and a half minutes after going up 5-1 Cuylle scored his team leading 12th goal on the powerplay to make it a 5-2 game. Exactly 2 minutes after that Flint scored to again go up by 4, 6-2. The netminder Tovell was changed for Downey after the sixth goal. With just 14 seconds remaining in the period Johnston scored his 9th on the season to bring the Spitfires within 3 going into the 2nd intermission. Both Maggio and Ride were injured in the period and did not return for the rest of the game.
An undermanned third period didn't get the Spitfires down as they were able to turn the game around. Cuylle scored his hat-trick goal on the powerplay after tipping a Henault point shot into the net 4:51 into the period. Just 3 minutes later McDonald scored his 9th off a rebound, Renwick and Zito drew the assists. And just under 8 minutes later it was McDonald again who sniped his 10th top-shelf to tie the game and the WFCU Centre went wild after coming all the way back from a 4-goal deficit.
In overtime the Spitfires had one chance as well as Flint had one chance but both goalies stood tall.
In the shootout, Johnston shot first and scored after some silky mitts fooled the netminder, Giroux then shot for Flint but was stopped by Downey, Daniel D'Amico had the 2nd shot for the Spits and he scored 5-hole. Othmann had to score to stay alive but Downey stood tall and Othmann missed wide.
The Spitfires next home game is this Wednesday November 24th at 7:30pm when the London Knights come to town.
