Republic FC Power Soccer Squad Looks to Bring National Tournament to Region

Earlier this week, Republic FC put aside their boots and took to the court, playing a different kind of football with some of its most passionate supporters. Midfielder Luis Felipe, forward Luther Archimède, and Goalkeeper Coach Ross Cain visited Republic FC Power Soccer in Roseville for practice on Wednesday - getting the full experience of power-chair competition.

Archimède and Luis Felipe each competed in a chair during the visit - embracing the challenge of moving about the court and the intricacies of the modified game. Power soccer - played with powered wheelchairs, a larger ball, and on a regulation size basketball court - presents a unique challenge, one much different than the game most are accustomed to.

The visit took place at @The Grounds in Roseville - a brand new facility the squad hopes could serve as the kind of venue suitable to host tournaments to help grow the game and provide additional opportunities for players to compete. Currently, the team travels to Indianapolis each summer for the Conference Cup Championship series, where they reached the quarterfinals in the 2023 edition. But their competitive spirit brings a desire to take the court as often as they can - and naturally, it ups the anticipation when another squad is on the opposite side. And, Sacramento has a long history of supporting the game.

"Power soccer is hard - but really fun, said Luis Felipe. "Sacramento supports soccer in all forms and I think it would be exciting for more competition to come here to help grow the game."

Power soccer has grown rapidly throughout the United States and the rest of the globe - with teams and competitions littered throughout countless communities. U.S. Soccer has fielded an independent Power Soccer National team since 2007 and competes in regular international tournaments. This week, the Power Soccer NT is in Australia for the 2023 FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup, and was incorporated into the federations Extended National Teams program in 2022.
