Reno Drops 14-7 Decision to Sacramento

RENO, Nev.-Tony Abreu extended his hitting streak to a season-long 13 games Wednesday afternoon, but the Reno Aces spoiled an early lead and never recovered, falling 14-7 to the Sacramento River Cats at Aces Ballpark.

A day after winning the series opener, Reno hopped out to a 3-1 lead after the first inning Wednesday. But the River Cats would score the game's next 11 runs to even the series at a game apiece.

Abreu finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for Reno, keeping his Pacific Coast League leading hitting streak alive. Wily Mo Peña pushed his hitting streak to 12 games with a first-inning single, and Brandon Allen smashed a solo home run to straightaway center field in the eighth, his second of the season.

Aces starter Kyler Newby (0-1) was pinned with the loss Wednesday, surrendering five runs on five hits over 3.0 innings of work. Newby walked five and struck out four. Three Reno relievers combined to allow nine runs-eight earned-on 12 hits over the game's final six frames.

The win went to Sacramento's Guillermo Moscoso (1-0), who came on in the second in relief of Michael Wuertz, who started on a Major League rehabilitation assignment. Moscoso scattered just a hit and no runs over five innings of work. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter. In all, River Cats pitchers recorded 10 strikeouts on the day.

The Aces and River Cats will tangle once again on Thursday night at Aces Ballpark. LHP Zach Kroenke (2-0, 3.65 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the River Cats counter with RHP Yadel Marti (0-0, 2.45 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. PT, and the game will be highlighted by the first Coors Light Thirsty Thursday(tm) of the young season.
