Renegades Win Wild One in 10

Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (June 24, 2013) - One thing you will soon come to learn about the Brooklyn Cyclones and Hudson Valley Renegades is that they have developed an on-field rivalry without any bad blood. The first two meetings were well played but ended with Cyclones one-run victories, albeit games in which the Renegades had leads. So entering Tuesday night's finale at Dutchess Stadium, there was no rhyme or reason to any of the subsequent events during the two hour and 57 minute affair. It was sloppy, with the teams combining for nine errors, yet tightly contested. In the end, it became the second extra inning game of the series, and James Harris would be the man responsible for sending the 4,316 in attendance home happy.

It could not have started any worse for the 'Gades, as the Cyclones sent ten men to the plate in the top of the first off lefty starter Ben Griset. The frame ended with five runs on the scoreboard thanks to a pair of Hudson Valley errors as well as a bases clearing two-run double off the bat of Matt Oberste in the middle of the onslaught. Hard to believe, but Brooklyn would not score the rest of the evening.

So the Renegades went to work and added a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Johnny Field. In the third, three more runs came in as Brooklyn returned the favor with a pair of errors before RBIs from Oscar Hernandez and Omar Narvaez. Then in the fourth with the score 5-4, Julian Ridings and Patrick Blair would successfully complete a double steal. The problem was that Tomas Nido's throw to get Ridings at third hopped past Anthony Chavez and into left field, allowing Ridings to score the tying run.

The real story of the night however, was the phenomenal work of the Renegades bullpen. With nine pitchers used through the first two games of the series, manager Michael Johns was fairly short on arms for another potentially long evening. The circumstances allowed Aaron Griffin to shine in his most dominant appearance thus far. The tenth round pick allowed just one hit while striking out three across four innings of relief. Fellow rookie Justin Choate was equally as impressive in his pro debut with four more scoreless innings with just two hits and a walk allowed.

In the home ninth with two outs and the score still tied at five, the Renegades had their best chance after Ariel Soriano singled with Blair at first. But Blair was thrown out at third for the final out on a rocket from right fielder James Roche to send the game to the tenth.

Hernandez got it started in the bottom of the tenth with a one out single off Cyclones lefty Shane Bay. A single by Darryl George and a walk to John Alexander loaded them up with two outs for Harris. In his last three games, the former first round pick was just 1-for-12 with seven strikeouts. But he whipped the crowd into a frenzy with the game-winning single to right on a 2-2 pitch to give the 'Gades a 6-5 extra-inning victory.

NOTES: Of the 11 runs scored, only four of them were earned...Choate was officially added to the roster less than two hours prior to first pitch following Colton Reavis' placement on the 7-Day Disabled List...Hernandez finished 2-for-5 for his third straight multi-hit game.

This three game mini-homestand wraps up Wednesday night at 7:05 when the Renegades welcome the Staten Island Yankees to Dutchess Stadium. RHP Cale Coshow (0-0, 9.00 ERA) gets the ball for the Yanks against Renegades righty Austin Pruitt (0-0, 0.00 ERA). The Renegades 20th Season celebration continues as the team welcomes its 3 Millionth Fan to the ballpark Wednesday night. Also, former New York Yankee Ruben Sierra will be in attendance signing autographs. Call 845-838-0094 or visit www.hvrenegades.com to purchase your tickets now.
