NORWICH, CT --- The Connecticut Tigers scored four runs in the first inning and overall scored seven unearned runs with the help of five Vermont errors for a 10-3 New York-Penn League victory over the Lake Monsters at Dodd Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Tigers got on the board quickly with a two-run homer from Ben Verlander (brother of Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander) and a two-out, two-run single from Pat Leyland (son of Detroit manager Jim Leyland). The Lake Monsters got a run back in the top of the second as Michael Soto led off with a single and later scored from third on a two-out fielding error by shortstop Curtis Powell.

After a two-out RBI double from Verlander gave the Tigers a 5-1 lead, Vermont was able to cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the fourth. Tyler Marincov and Ryan Gorton started the rally with back-to-back one-out walks, then scored on back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Xavier Macklin and Jaycob Brugman. But then Tiger relievers allowed just one more hit (a fifth-inning Soto single) the rest of the game and retire the final 13 Vermont batters of the game.

The Lake Monsters defense would also struggle the rest of the way with errors by shortstop Melvin Mercedes in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings leading to an unearned run in each frame for the Tigers, who then added two more unearned runs in the eighth after a throwing error by third baseman Chad Pinder.

Verlander was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and three RBI for the Tigers, while Kasey Coffman went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double and an RBI. Connecticut batters had five doubles and a homer among their 13 hits, while reliever Johnnie Kirkland (1-0) tossed three scoreless innings for the win. Vermont starter Jose Torres (1-1) allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits over 3 1/3 innings for the loss, while Soto and Brugman each had two of the Lake Monsters six hits.

Vermont, 3-6 to start the 2013 season, will look for their first road victory (0-4) on Thursday night at Connecticut when they wrap up the quick two-game series with the Tigers. The Lake Monsters then head to Lowell for a three-game series over the weekend before returning to Centennial Field for a three-game homestand against Tri-City July 1-3.
