CONEY ISLAND, NY - Behind power and pitching, the Hudson Valley Renegades shut down the Brooklyn Cyclones, the High-A affiliate of the New York Mets, with a 5-1 decision Saturday night at Maimonides Park in front of 5,050.

KEY PLAYS

Renegades catcher Carlos Narvaez cracked a three-run home run over the 16-foot-high wall in left field in the top of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie against Brooklyn starter Luis Moreno to make it 3-0. In the top of the eighth, Hudson Valley added to the lead when Grant Richardson pushed a two-run home run over the left-center field wall.

Hudson Valley starter Richard Fitts tossed six scoreless in his second High-A start, striking out seven and walking one with four scattered hits in the victory.

Brooklyn's lone run came in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Rudick walked and scored on a double-play ball against Renegades reliever Nelson Alvarez to cut the deficit to 5-1.

NEWS AND NOTES

With the victory, Hudson Valley overtakes Brooklyn for first place by a half-game in the North Division of the South Atlantic League. Of the 29 head-to-head contests, Hudson Valley has won 15 and Brooklyn has won 14.

Jose Peroza has reached base in 20 consecutive contests, collecting two hits. Matt Rudick pushed his on-base streak to 10 games with a late walk.

Daniel Juarez tossed a perfect ninth inning in his High-A debut, earning the promotion from Low-A St. Lucie earlier in the day.
