Renegades Snap Four Game Losing Streak

The Renegades snapped a four game losing streak and kept their playoff hopes alive with a 6-2 victory Thursday night against the Lowell Spinners in front of 4,383 fans at Dutchess Stadium.
One a night when the Renegades where honoring the Negro League Players of the past the baseball gods looked to be cheering for the Renegades and helped keep them in the playoff race. The Renegades and the Lowell Spinners both wore authentic Negro League jerseys to show their respect for the players that sacrificed and endured so much for a game they loved.
The Spinners started where they left off last night plating a lone run in the visiting half of the first. After a controversial call at first base Ryan Dent put himself in scoring position by swiping second (starter Nick Barnese looked to have Dent picked off at first but was ruled safe by the field umpire). Dent advanced to third two batters later on a groundout to Mike Ross at second. With two outs and Dent on third Deshaun Brooks came through for the Spinners hitting a RBI single to center field giving the Spinners an early one-run lead.
The Renegades evened the score in the home half of the second inning plating a run of their own. With Michael Sheridan on second and one out Mike Ross hit a seeing-eye single to right field that bounced just over the glove of the first baseman to score Sheridan from second. During the next at-bat Ross did what he does best and stole his 29th base of the season and the Renegades 100th of the year. The Renegades team record sits at 120 stolen bases set back in 1999.
The Renegades took a three-run lead in the fourth and would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. With runners at the corners Ross hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sheridan from third. With two runners in scoring position Jason Tweedy slapped a single to center field that increased the Renegades lead to two runs, 4-2.
The Renegades added two insurance runs plating a run in the fifth and seventh to bring the score to its final 6-2.
To close out the game in the top of the ninth Manager Joe Alvarez turned to his All-Star closer Matt Gorgen to record the final outs. Gorgen threw a hitless ninth and struck out one batter.
Renegades starter Barnese picked up his fourth win of the season hurling six innings of four-hit, two-run baseball while striking out seven. His seven strikeouts on the night increase his strikeout total to a team-leading 75, which is also good enough for second most in the NYPL.
First baseman Sheridan had a tremendous night at the plate coming up a homerun shy of the cycle. Sheridan went 3-for-3 on the night with three runs scored, a walk and one RBI.
The Renegades finish up the three-game series vs. the Spinners Friday Night with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. Knuckleballer Diego Echeverria (4-0, 4.89) will get the starting nod for the Renegades and he will be facing off against right-handed pitcher Stolmy Pimentel (5-2, 3.26).
On a side note the Staten Island Yankees defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats 4-3 and the Brooklyn Cyclones defeated the Oneonta Tigers 6-0. The Renegade still remain in third place in the McNamara Division five games behind Staten Island.
