Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - A two-out rally in the top of the fifth proved to be the difference on Tuesday evening as Brooklyn fell to Hudson Valley by the score of 7-4 at Maimonides Park.
Brooklyn struck first in the bottom of the third after Matt O'Neill walked to start the frame. Shervyen Newton and Matt Rudick followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases with nobody out. William Lugo - making his Coney Island debut - followed with an RBI single to give Brooklyn a 1-0 lead. After Alex Ramirez struck out, Jose Peroza worked a bases-loaded walk to extend the Brooklyn lead to 2-0. But that's where the line would stop as Stanley Consuegra grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth the lead would double. Joe Suozzi got the rally started with a one-out walk and, after stealing second, advanced to third on a single from Matt O'Neill. Shervyen Newton then hit a dribbler back toward the pitcher that allowed Suozzi to score on the groundout to make it 3-0 Brooklyn. Then, with a runner on second and two outs, Matt Rudick hit a groundball that handcuffed T.J. Rumfield at first base for an error allowing another Brooklyn run to score, making it 4-0.
But the game turned on its head in the top of the fifth. Dominic Hamel made the start for Brooklyn and wiggled out of trouble in the top of the third, when he had a bases-loaded with nobody out jam, but his luck ran out in the fifth. Eduardo Torrealba and Anthony Seigler had back-to-back singles to start the threat, before Hamel got Jasson Dominguez to ground out and Tyler Hardman to pop out putting two runners on with two outs. T.J. Rumfield then worked a walk to load the bases for Grant Richardson. Hamel got ahead in the count 0-2, but Richardson singled to right to score a pair and cut the Brooklyn lead to 4-2. Benjamin Cowles was next up for Hudson Valley, and again fell behind 0-2 before he singled to right field to score two more runs and get things even at 4-4. Carlos Narvaez - again in an 0-2 hole - followed with a double to score Cowles and give Hudson Valley the 5-4 lead.
Hudson Valley tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth to make the final score 7-4.
Tommy Hunter made a Major League Rehab Appearance for Brooklyn on Tuesday evening. The righthander tossed a scoreless sixth inning, striking out a pair in his lone inning of work.
