Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - The Aberdeen IronBirds slipped past the Hudson Valley Renegades 2-1 Saturday night at Heritage Financial Park. Both teams had to endure a 1:25 rain delay before the game started due to a storm that rolled through the area right before the scheduled first pitch.
For the second straight night, both squads received great starts from their starting pitchers. Trace Bright struck out eight in 4.2 innings for Aberdeen, while Juan Carela tossed 4.1 scoreless frames, and matched his career high with nine strikeouts for Hudson Valley. The leadoff man for Aberdeen reached base safely in eight of the nine innings tonight.
Hudson Valley struck first with a run in the third inning. Ben Cowles belted a ball high off the wall in center field for a one-out double. The next batter, Spencer Jones, doubled him home to take a 1-0 lead. Bright then retired the next two batters to leave Jones stranded at second base. That would be the only run to cross against Bright and for the 'Gades in the contest.
After Carela struck out the lone batter he faced in the fifth inning, Enrique Santana was the first man out of the bullpen. Santana fired a scoreless 1.1 frames, giving way to Clay Aguilar in the sixth, who entered with a man at second base and no outs. The southpaw induced an inning-ending groundout to Noelberth Romero to preserve the 'Gades 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, Luis Valdez laced a leadoff double and advanced to third on a groundout. Max Wagner brought Valdez home on a deep fly ball to right field to tie the game at one.
The IronBirds took the lead in the ninth on a fielder's choice off Danny Watson (0-1). Isaac De Leon led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Romero to place runners on the corners with nobody out. Valdez chopped a ball on the right side of the infield, which scored De Leon for the IronBirds second run of the game.
In relief, Ryan Long (1-1) retired 11 of 13 batters he faced in four scoreless innings to get the win and snap the Renegades four-game win streak.
Hudson Valley and Aberdeen wrap up their six-game series on Sunday afternoon at Heritage Financial Park as Drew Thorpe battles Kyle Virbitsky. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Coverage begins on the Renegades Baseball Network at 1:45.
