Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
The Renegades fell to the division-leading Staten Island Yankees 6-1 Monday night in game one of the home-road series.
Staten Islands offense jumped all over starter Tyree Hayes recording two runs in the visiting half of the first. After striking out the first batter in five pitches Hayes allowed the next four batters to reach base safely. With David Adams on first Brian Baisley hit a blistering double down the left field line scoring Adams from second. Baisley advanced to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat and trotted home on a Daniel Brewer single to right field, to bring the score to 2-0 in favor of the visiting Yankees.
Hayes was able to keep the Yankees in check for the next two innings but came unraveled in the top of the fourth inning. After allowing the first two runners to reach base safely Mitch Abeita hit a towering double over the head of left fielder Jeremy Beckham. Braedyn Pruitt scored from second on the play and Mike Lyon got caught in a run down between third and home, which ended in Lyon being tagged out at home - left fielder to the second baseman to the third baseman. Abeita advanced to third during the run down. Abeita crossed home two batters later on a Raymond Kruml single that chased Hayes from the game.
Righty Robert Della Grotta came into the game in relief of Hayes with two outs and runners on first and second. Before closing out the inning Della Grotta gave up a RBI single to Adams to bring the score to 5-0 in favor of the Yankees.
The Renegades crack the Yankees defense for just a second in the home half of the fourth plating their first run of the game. First round draft pick Tim Beckham started the inning off with a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a Jason Tweedy double to right field. The young speedster scored during the next at-bat on a Jake Jefferies single to left field.
The Yankees bounced right back nullifying the Renegades previous inning plating a run of their own. With no one out and a runner on third Lyon hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring the score to 6-1.
The Renegades railed in the ninth but would come up short plating just two runs. For the second time tonight Beckham leadoff with a walk and slowly made his way around the base path stopping at third with two outs. Mike Sheridan's lone hit of the night came in the form of an RBI double to right field allowing Beckham to reach home for the second time on the night. Sheridan scored the final run of the game on a Justin Reynolds double to left field to bring the score to its final 6-3.
The Renegades travel down south to Staten Island to play game two of the two game series Tuesday night with the first pitch slated for 7:10 p.m.
