Muckdogs Bring Labor Day Lumber, Get Past Spikes, 13-0

STATE COLLEGE, PA-The Batavia Muckdogs brought the lumber to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for Labor Day Monday night, delivering a pair of homers and 12 hits in a 13-0 defeat of the Spikes.

The Spikes collected three hits off of Muckdogs pitching in the game, one by David Rubinstein, who extended his hit streak to 12 games with a fifth inning single.

Shane Peterson led off the scoring with a two-run homer in the first off of State College (16-53) starter Brian Leach (1-3). Three walks and a double by Xavier Scruggs set up two more runs to score on an error in the fourth, and a fielder's choice by Colt Sedbrook plated another run to make it a six-run lead for Batavia (43-26)

After another run in the sixth, a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly set up a two-run homer by Chris Swauger. Batavia completed the scoring in the ninth with a two-run triple by Alex Castellanos and a sacrifice fly by Jermaine Curtis.

Sedbrook went 3-for-5 with an RBI. The Spikes used a season-high six pitchers, including the two newest Spikes, Brent Klinger and Gabriel Alvarado. Klinger and Alvarado were added today, and Kyle McPherson and Ramon Aguero were shifted to the GCL Pirates roster.

Scott Gorgen (4-2) got the win for Batavia, pitching five innings and allowing two hits and a walk while striking out one. Miguel Tapia and LaCurtis Mayes took over and held the Spikes to one hit the rest of the way.

Leach took the loss for the Spikes in front of 2,891 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The right-hander allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits and three walks.

The Spikes come back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park Tuesday night for the second game of the final homestand of the year against the Batavia Muckdogs with a 7:05 start. College students will have the chance to get cool stuff for their dorm rooms in the Pimp Your Dorm Room Giveaway.

State College will send right-hander Carlos Amaro (1-1) to the mound to face Batavia right-hander Tom Eager (5-3).
