Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - The Hudson Valley Renegades held off the Rome Braves in a 4-2 triumph on Wednesday night at Heritage Financial Park. With a win and a loss by the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Renegades regained first place in the SAL North with seven games left to play in the first half.
In the top of the first, Tyrone Yulie (2-4) retired the first two batters before Nacho Alvarez doubled to right field on a ball lost in the sky. The next batter, David McCabe, singled him home to hand the Braves a 1-0 lead. That would be the only damage off Yulie, who finished the night with seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Hudson Valley responded quickly with a two-run bottom half of the frame. Spencer Jones and Rafael Flores each notched a pair of singles before Antonio Gómez singled Jones home to tie the game at one. Alexander Vargas belted a double down the right field to plate Flores and hand the Renegades a 2-1 lead that they never relinquished.
In the fourth, after Vargas reached on an error by Kevin Kilpatrick, Spencer Henson crushed the first pitch from Daniel Martinez (2-1) over the left field wall for his ninth home run of the season to expand the lead to 4-1.
Rome tallied one more run on a solo home run by Brandon Parker off Jack Neely in the seventh. It was the first earned run off the Renegades bullpen since May 31st. Bailey Dees tossed a scoreless ninth to secure his third save of the season. Ryan Anderson, Neely and Dees combined to allow one run on two hits while striking out five across 4.0 innings of relief. The Renegades and Braves will continue their six-game series on Thursday at Heritage Financial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on the Renegades Baseball Network beginning at 6:45 p.m. The Renegades will send RHP Zach Messinger (0-4, 2.68) to the hill opposite of RHP Luis Vargas (4-3, 5.27) for the Braves.
