Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS (Tuesday, August 21): The Hudson Valley Renegades baffled the Connecticut Tigers the whole game and came away with a 4-0 shutout victory Tuesday night in front of 4,400 fans at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades (41-20) earned their fourth straight win by allowing just two hits and one walk to the Tigers (28-32) over the entire game; Connecticut managed a measly five baserunners against the Hudson Valley pitching staff. With a Brooklyn loss to the Tri-City ValleyCats, the Renegades assume a four-game lead in the New York-Penn League's McNamara Division with only 15 games left in the regular season.
Hudson Valley opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, left fielder Marty Gantt lined a single to center field, and advanced to second on a throwing error when Tigers starting pitcher Edgar De La Rosa (4-4) tried to pick him off first. De La Rosa then hit center fielder Joey Rickard with a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Second baseman Tommy Coyle drew a walk to load the bases for catcher Luke Maile, who grounded softly to the shortstop. The Tigers hoped to turn two and end the inning, but Maile hustled up the line to beat the throw to first. The play allowed Gantt to come home and score the first run to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead. Hudson Valley loaded the bases again with two outs, but could not muster another tally.
The 'Gades tacked on more scoring in the bottom of the seventh. First baseman Michael Williams and left fielder Joel Caminero drew back-to- back walks from reliever Ramon Lebron to lead off the inning. Gantt dropped down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third with one out, and Rickard lofted a sacrifice fly to right field that let Caminero reach third and scored Williams to make it 2-0 Renegades. Coyle then turned on a 2-0 fastball from Lebron and scorched it over the right field fence for his third homer of the season, giving the 'Gades their final 4-0 lead.
Hudson Valley starter Jesse Hahn (2-2) put up a superb performance, allowing just one hit and one walk over five innings while striking out six to earn the win. The reigning NYPL Pitcher of the Week now has pitched twice against Connecticut, and has given up a combined two hits and one walk over ten innings against 12 strikeouts. Ian Kendall put up two innings of scoreless relief, hitting one batter and striking one out. Jose Molina pitched shutout ball in the eighth and ninth, allowing one hit against three whiffs.
De La Rosa took the loss and fell to 4-4; he gave up a run on three hits and two walks over five innings, fanning five batters and hitting Rickard twice with pitches. Lebron coughed up three runs in two innings on a hit and two walks, striking out two. Matt Davenport pitched a scoreless inning of relief, allowing one hit.
The Renegades will try to get their fifth consecutive win Wednesday in game two of the three-game set against the Tigers. Hudson Valley lefty Matt Spann will start against Connecticut righty Endrys Briceno. It's "Dog Days of Summer" Night at the Dutch! Bring your pooch to the ballpark as we celebrate our annual dog day. The first 500 fans with a dog, will receive a dog bag sponsored by Furry People Pet Sitting. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, with Ben Gellman's pregame show set for 6:50 p.m. on 1450 and 1370 AM WKIP, as well as online at HVRenegades.com.
