Lowell Spinners News Release

ABERDEEN, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds scored early and often, scoring in five of the first six innings to send the Lowell Spinners to their fourth straight loss on the start of a three-game road-trip, 6-3, Monday Night in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen (25-36) scored early and often, getting things started in the first inning. Anthony Vega led off with a single to shallow left, stealing second and advancing to third on a Creede Simpson single. After a delay when Zach Kapstein appeared to pull a hamstring on the play, a passed ball by Roberto Reyes allowed Vega to score, advancing Simpson to second. Sam Kimmel followed with a single to left, scoring Simpson to give the IronBirds a 2-0 lead.

The IronBirds would extend the lead to three in the third when Kimmel beat out a one-out infield single, scoring on a Joel Hutter triple to right.

They would add single runs in the fourth, on a Simpson RBI single, and fifth inning, on a Chase Weems RBI double, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.

Lowell (28-33) got on the board in the sixth inning with a little two-out rally. Mookie Betts worked a two-out walk and Aneury Tavarez took a 1-1 offering from Sander Beck over the right field wall to cut the lead to 5-2.

The two teams traded single runs, with Aberdeen plating a run in the sixth on a Simpson home run and Lowell adding a run of their own in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Betts, but the Spinners could not pull any closer as the IronBirds held on a 6-3 final.

No Spinner had more than one hit, though Tavarez, Betts and Guerrero each reached base twice. Tavarez's home run was his fourth of the season, while Betts pulled within one RBI of David Chester for the team lead, driving in his 26th run of the season.

Pat Light (0-2, 3.38) started for the Spinners, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk, striking out one in 2.1 innings before reaching his pitch limit. Raynel Velette followed with 3.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks, also striking out one. Braden Kapteyn pitched the final two frames, allowing just one hit while striking out two to give the Spinners a chance at a comeback.

The two teams meet again Wednesday night when Madison Younginer gets the ball in his third rehab appearance, to be followed by William Cuevas. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
