Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
FISHKILL, N.Y. (June 30, 2009) - 7,770 fans sat through a 28 minute rain delay at KeySpan Park to watch the Renegades drop their fourth game in a row Tuesday night, falling to the Brooklyn Cyclones by a final of 3-1.
The Renegades starter right-handed Kyle Ayers (1-1, 1.86) recorded the loss on the night hurling 4.1 innings of five-hit, three-run baseball. Only two of the three Brooklyn runs were earned due to a throwing error by shortstop Tyler Bortnick in the bottom of the fourth.
Renegades center fielder Chris Murrill continues to be a staple in the Renegades lineup going 1-for-4 on the night with a run scored and a stolen base. Murrill's single extended his current hitting streak to three games and the stolen base increased his total to a New York-Penn League best seven.
Tonight the bottom of the Renegades lineup (6th and 7th batters) came alive recording five of the Renegades nine hits on the night. Designated hitter Mark Thomas recorded a 3-for-4 night with a double and left fielder Brett Nommensen went 2-for-4.
The Cyclones took a two-run lead in the home half of the first with back-to-back-to-back hits. With one out, Sam Honeck singled to right field and etched the Brooklyn's first run of the game on a RBI double off the bat of Nicholas Giarraputo. The next batter, Doc Doyle, advanced Giarrputo home on a single to shortstop Bortnick. Giarraputo would have only advanced to third had it not been for a throwing error from Bortnick that sent Doyle to second and allowed Giarraputo to record the Cyclones second knock of the inning, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of Brooklyn.
The Cyclones plated another run in the fifth to bring the score to 3-0. With Luis Nieves on third and one out the Renegades brought in reliever Kevin Chavez. After a hit batter, Chavez gave up a sacrifice fly to Honeck giving the Cyclones a three-run lead.
In the visiting half of the sixth the Renegades offense recorded their only run of the game. Murrill led the inning off with a bunt single down the first base line. During the next at-bat Murrill stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Cyclones catcher, Juan Centeno. Eli Sonoqui then grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Murrill to score bringing the score to its final 3-1, in favor of the Cyclones.
The Renegades return home Wednesday for a three-game series vs. the Vermont Lake Monsters, affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Lake Monsters will be sending RHP Trevor Holder to the mound for his first appearance of the 2009 season and southpaw Kyle Lobstein will be getting the ball for the Renegades. First pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
