Yankees Sweep 'Birds in Extra Inning Heroics

(STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.) - Rob Lyerly's single to right field drove in the game-winning won as the Yankees took a 4-3 win over Aberdeen in 11 innings.

The Baby Bombers (5-6) out hit Aberdeen (4-7) 10 -to-8 to give Staten Island the three game sweep over the IronBirds.

Jose Barajas took the loss (0-1) after giving up one run on one hit. Griffin Bailey earned his first win with the Yankees after pitching one scoreless frame.

The IronBirds loaded the bases in the top of the 11th inning, but couldn't bring home the game-leading run after Mike Mooney was struck out by Bailey.

Staten Island took a 2-0 lead after Jimmy Paredes and Zoilo Almmonte scored with a sac fly out and an RBI double by Neil Medchill.

Richard D'Oleo began the second inning with a lead-off double. Mooney hammered his first professional home run to left field to tie the contest at 2-2.

Yankee DeAngelo Mack laced a double to left field, allowing Medchill to score, tying the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning.

Mooney completed a 2-for-6 evening with a home run, an RBI and a double. D'Oleo has a four-game hit streak after going 1-for-4 on Tuesday.

Tom Edwards , 2-for-4 with a walk, recorded a single in the fourth inning to extend his hit streak to six games.

‘Birds starter Patrick Kantakevich did not receive a decision in his second start with Aberdeen. The right-hander gave up two earned runs on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. Reliever Stephen Procner threw 2.1 innings as he gave up one run on three hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Scott Mueller tossed two scoreless innings, giving up one hit.

The ‘Birds will begin a three game series at Ripken Stadium on Wednesday evening. Right-hander Brandon Erbe will start for the ‘Birds in the 7:05 p.m. contest.
