Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Renegades announced a transaction with the Calgary Stampeders this afternoon in which the Renegades acquired non-import wide receiver Andrew Noel (6-5, 227, Acadia) and non-import defensive back Hassan Probherbs (5-11, 175, Portland State) in exchange for non-import wide receiver Denis Montana (6-1, 199, Concordia) and the negotiation rights to import wide receiver Sean Riley (5-9, 170, Western Michigan).

Noel, a 25-year-old native of Scarborough, Ontario, played one game in his rookie Canadian Football League season last year with the Montreal Alouettes who drafted him in the first round, ninth overall, during the 2003 Canadian College Draft.

During his final collegiate season at Acadia in 2002, Noel was named to the Atlantic conference first all-star team, leading the conference in receptions per game (6.5) and average yards receiving per game (95).

Like Noel, Probherbs entered the CFL via the 2003 Canadian College Draft, selected by the Stampeders in the fourth round.

During his rookie CFL season in 2003, Probherbs recovered three fumbles, made nine tackles, four special teams tackles, one pass knockdown and had 13 hits. He also returned a missed field goal.

The Stampeders acquired Montana who spent the first two seasons of Renegades history at the wide receiver position. The 32-year-old native of Montreal ranked third on the Renegades in 2003 with 595 receiving yards and fourth in receptions with 39 catches, a personal season best in seven CFL seasons.

Signed as a free agent by the Renegades in February of 2002, Montana caught 35 passes for 399 yards during the 2002 inaugural Renegades season and caught a 91-yard touchdown pass on July 4 at Edmonton (from Dan Crowley), the longest reception of his career and the longest pass play in team history.

"On behalf of our coaching staff and everyone in our organization, we would like to thank Denis for his significant contributions to our club over the past two seasons," said Renegades general manager Eric Tillman. "Denis has always represented our team in a first-class manner both on and off the field.

"It's never easy to trade quality people, but with the off-season acquisition of Pat Woodcock and the decision to draft David Azzi, this became the best option available for all parties," added Tillman.
