Remarkable Year for Montour

Waterloo, Iowa-Defenseman Brandon Montour could not have made a stronger impression during his Waterloo Black Hawks rookie season, and his effort was recognized with the final United States Hockey League's CCM Defenseman of the Week award, conferred by the USHL on Monday.

When the Black Hawks needed a goal against the RoughRiders over the weekend, Montour was there to help provide it. During two weekend wins, the University of Massachusetts recruit tallied four points, all coming at times when Waterloo was either tied or trailing. Down 1-0 on Friday, he create an equalizer by Peter Krieger during the second period, then, later in the frame, scored the go-ahead goal, which proved to be the winner during the 5-1 decision. When Waterloo trailed 1-0 and 2-1 on Saturday, Montour set up tying goals by Drew Melanson and Krieger, allowing the Hawks to force overtime and clinch the Anderson Cup. Montour also posted a +3 plus/minus differential.

It was an incredible year for #62; Montour was the only USHL defenseman to finish among the league's top 30 scorers, ranking ninth overall with 62 points. His 48 assists were second in the USHL, behind only the circuit's top point producer, Jake Randolph of the Omaha Lancers, who recorded 60 "helpers." With a +35 plus/minus rating, the Oshweken Ontario, native ended the year ranked sixth league-wide in that category. During a stretch from mid-December through February, Montour recorded at least one point in 18 consecutive games, the longest streak of its kind in the USHL during 2013/14.

Montour was also named the CCM Defenseman of the Week last Monday and on four additional occasions throughout the winter.
