Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI --- The Midland RockHounds scored in four consecutive innings to record the 8-5 comeback victory in front of 6,236 fans Saturday night at Whataburger Field.

The RockHounds (24-12, 57-49 overall) used a pair of two-run home runs by Tyler Marincov and Josh Rodriguez and tallied five total extra base hits to erase a 2-1 deficit after four innings. Joel Seddon (6-8) earned the win for Midland, while Kent Emanuel (3-1) took his first loss of 2016 for Corpus Christi (16-20, 63-43 overall). Kyle Finnegan recorded save No. 3 for the visitors.

Midland opened the scoring for the first time in the series in the third inning, as Matt Chapman drove in his 66th run of the season on a two-out double to drive in Andy Paz. Tyler Marincov added to the threat by drawing a walk, but Emanuel settled down and struck out Viosergy Rosa to end the inning.

Corpus Christi responded in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Nick Tanielu roped his 10th double of the season to begin the frame, Danry Vasquez skied a RBI triple-his first of 2016-to the right field corner. The Hooks' leftfielder scored two batters later on a RBI groundball from Conrad Gregor to give the hosts their first lead.

The two runs given up by Seddon snapped his streak of three consecutive starts of allowing just a single earned run.

The RockHounds responded during their next at-bats, plating three runs in the fifth to regain the 4-2 lead. Chapman drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to James Ramsay in right field to drive in Brett Vertigan. One pitch later, Marincov smoked his ninth home run of the season-a two-run shot to drive in Paz.

The home runs continued to fuel the Hounds offense in the sixth inning, as Emanuel was knocked out of the game after Rodriguez drove in J.P. Sportman on a two-run home run that flew just over the glove of Vasquez in left field.

The Hooks responded in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to knock Seddon out of the game. With two on and one out, Gregor added to his RBI total on the night by smoking a three-run shot to the right-center field berm to cut the deficit to 6-5.

The Corpus Christi first baseman entered the night's game hitless in his last 10 at-bats, but recorded two hits and four RBIs in his four at-bats to break out of the slump.

Midland would once again respond in the seventh inning, adding an insurance via another RBI double. With one out, Yairo Munoz lined a two-bagger to the left field corner, plating Rosa and giving the shortstop his first hit of the game. The RockHounds tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth inning after reliever Kyle Smith uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Paz.

Emanuel took the loss after throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits for his first loss of the 2016 campaign. Smith entered in the sixth inning and threw 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing a pair of earned runs while striking out six Hounds. Michael Freeman came into the game in the ninth inning and threw a perfect 1-2-3 frame.

The four-game series with Midland finishes Sunday evening at 6:05 with Cy Sneed (4-4) squaring off with Heath Fillmyer (1-0). Gates open at 4:35 p.m., with the first 1,250 kids ages 12 and under receiving a Hooks lunchbox, presented by Mrs. Baird's. It is also another HEB Kids Day, where kids get to run the bases after the game.
