Rejuvenated Revs return to Gillette Stadium to host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night
May 11, 2009 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - After snapping a brief two-game losing streak with a hard-fought draw in Chicago this past weekend, the New England Revolution will train in Foxborough four times this week before hosting the Colorado Rapids at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, May 16.
NEW ENGLAND VS. COLORADO SERIES INFORMATION
Colorado leads the all-time, regular-season series between the two teams, 16-11-5 ... New England is 8-5-3 against the Rapids at home - including 5-2-2 at Gillette Stadium - but just 3-11-2 in Colorado. Saturday night's meeting will be the first of two between New England and Colorado in the 2009 regular season, and the only one at Gillette Stadium ... the season series will conclude on Oct. 3, when the Revs will visit the Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids won the 2008 season series, earning a 1-0 win at Gillette Stadium on April 12 and a 1-1 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sept. 20 ... it marked the first time that either team won the season series since 2005, when Colorado also earned one win and one draw in two meetings. The Revs have not won the season series against Colorado since 2001, which was the first time since they won the first two season series in 1996 and 1997 ... the teams have drawn the season series in five of the last seven years, with the Rapids winning the series in 2005 and 2008. Colorado's victory in New England last April was just the club's second-ever win at Gillette Stadium in nine visits to the facility ... prior to that match, the Rapids hadn't won in Foxborough since 2002, the year that Gillette Stadium opened. New England scored six goals against Colorado on Sept. 18, 2004, marking the most the team has ever scored in a single game ... the Revs won that match, 6-1, matching the largest margin of victory in club history. The Revs and Rapids have never met outside of MLS regular-season action. PLAYER NOTES VS. COLORADO
Taylor Twellman leads the Revs with nine career goals against the Rapids, while he's also added three assists in 13 appearances. Steve Ralston has six assists against Colorado in 14 games as a member of the Revolution, while he's also added three goals during his time in New England. Kenny Mansally scored the Revolution's only goal against Colorado last season, notching the game-tying goal in the 1-1 draw at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sept. 20. Matt Reis is 3-5-2 with a 1.21 goals against average and two shutouts in his Revolution career against the Rapids. LAST MEETING New England 1, Colorado 1
September 20, 2008 - Dick's Sporting Goods Park (Commerce City, Colo.)
Kenny Mansally scored the game-tying goal just minutes after entering the game as a halftime substitute, as the Revs earned a rare point in Colorado ... Colin Clark gave the home side the lead in the 42nd minute, rising to meet Terry Cooke's angled cross and flicking a header inside the far post ... Mansally replaced countryman Sainey Nyassi at halftime and the move paid off after just five minutes, as the Gambian chipped a 50th-minute shot over Rapids goalkeeper Preston Burpo, who was charging off his line ... New England goalkeeper Matt Reis made three saves - including big stops in the 77th and 83rd minutes - to help preserve the draw.
NEWS & NOTES
REVOLUTION PARTNERS WITH CITY OF BOSTON, GREATER BOSTON FOOD BANK
The Revolution will collect canned goods this week on behalf of the Greater Boston Food Bank, extending a partnership with the City of Boston and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino's Mayor's Food & Fuel Campaign that began earlier this spring ... the team already sponsored one collection day on Sunday, May 10, while another is set for Saturday, May 16 ... donations will be accepted at the Rock the Plaza concerts at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Patriot Place Plaza, and at each stadium gate prior to the Revolution's 7:30 p.m. match against the Colorado Rapids ... each fan who makes a donation of a canned good at the game will receive a coupon for a free 12 oz. soda for Saturday night's match.
REVS REMAIN ON PACE WITH GAMES IN HAND
With the club's 1-1 draw with the Chicago Fire on Saturday night (May 9), the Revolution remained just five points out of first place in the Eastern Conference, as no team ahead of the Revs managed a victory ... New England has at least one game in hand on every other team in the Eastern Conference, including two games in hand on D.C. United, Toronto FC and Kansas City, which are three of the four teams ahead of the Revs in the standings ... as it stands now, the Revolution would vault into first place in the conference if the club was to win its two games in hand.
HOME IS WHERE THE REVS ARE
After playing five of their first seven games this season on the road in hostile environments, the Revs will finally get a chance to play in front of their loyal supporters with three of their next four games set to take place at Gillette Stadium ... the stretch begins this Saturday night when the Revolution hosts the Colorado Rapids (May 16) ... the Revs will then return to the road briefly for a trip to Toronto (May 23) before coming home for their first back-to-back home games of the season against D.C. United (May 30) and the New York Red Bulls (June 7) ... New England is 1-1-0 at home and is the only team in the league to have played only two home games entering this week's action.
COLORADO BUCKS THE TREND
The Colorado Rapids defied history in their only visit to Gillette Stadium last season, earning a 1-0 win on April 12 courtesy of Nick LaBrocca's late goal ... prior to that victory, the Rapids hadn't won in Foxborough since July 24, 2002, when they escaped with a 3-2 victory in their first-ever visit to Gillette Stadium ... in the seven-game span between Colorado's two victories, New England went 5-0-2 at home against the Rapids and outscored their Western Conference opponents, 16-5 ... even with last season's loss, the Revs are still 5-2-2 against the Rapids at Gillette Stadium and 8-5-3 at home in the all-time series.
A HISTORY OF TIGHT AFFAIRS
New England and Colorado have made a habit of playing tightly-contested, low-scoring matches in recent years ... the Revolution and Rapids have split their last three meetings dating back to 2007, with each team earning a 1-0 win during that stretch and the other match resulting in a 1-1 draw ... additionally, New England and Colorado have played to four scoreless draws through regulation dating back to 1999, a figure which represents roughly 22 percent of the Revolution's total number of all-time scoreless draws (18).
REVOLUTION FACES ANOTHER TEST IN RESTED RAPIDS
For the second time in three weeks, the Revs will face a team coming off its bye week when they host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night (May 16) ... Colorado hasn't played since a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on May 2, while New England has played two matches since then: a 2-0 loss to Houston on May 3 and a 1-1 draw with Chicago on May 9 ... Houston was also coming off a bye week when the club visited Gillette Stadium.
REVS' SCORELESS STREAK ENDS AT 269 MINUTES
Shalrie Joseph's 49th-minute goal in the 1-1 draw with Chicago on Saturday night (May 9) ended the Revolution's fourth-longest scoreless streak in club history at 269 minutes ... the goal also prevented New England from being shut out for the third consecutive game, something that has only happened once before in team history - during the club's record scoreless streak of 361 minutes (May 1-29, 1999) ... prior to Joseph's game-tying strike, the Revolution hadn't scored since the 50th minute of the 1-1 draw with D.C. United (April 17) and had since been shut out by Real Salt Lake (April 25) and Houston (May 3).
REVOLUTION ACQUIRES RHODE ISLAND NATIVE NICO COLALUCA
The Revolution acquired Generation adidas midfielder and Coventry, R.I., product Nico Colaluca on May 6 through a trade with the Colorado Rapids, in exchange for Generation adidas defender Rob Valentino ... Colaluca is expected to join the Revolution for training beginning this week ... the 22-year-old midfielder is in his third MLS season after being drafted sixth overall by the Rapids in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft ... he has made four MLS appearances in his career, all during his rookie season ... Valentino was selected in the first round (13th overall) by the Revolution in the 2008 SuperDraft, but did not make an MLS appearance with the Revs.
KICKOFF SET FOR MAY 23 MATCH AGAINST TORONTO
The Revolution's match against Toronto FC on Saturday, May 23, at BMO Field in Toronto will kick off at 4 p.m. ET ... the match had previously been listed as "TBA" ... the game will be televised in New England on the Revs' exclusive regional television partner, TV38.
