Seattle Reign FC News Release
SEATTLE - Seattle Reign FC (2-2-0, 6 pts) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Washington Spirit (2-2-0, 6 pts) on Saturday, May 2 in front of a crowd of 2,703 on the Moda Pitch at Memorial Stadium.
After dominating the attack throughout the game's first 30 minutes, Seattle found the net first, courtesy of forward Beverly Yanez.
In the 35th minute, a cross in the box from forward Merritt Mathias found the foot of Yanez, with the latter putting a shot over the head of goalkeeper Kelsey Wys to give Seattle a 1-0 advantage.
Just minutes into the second half, Reign FC extended its lead to two, after Scottish international Kim Little sent in a cross to the box, with Mathias heading it in.
Washington cut the deficit in half in the 63rd minute, when Crystal Dunn connected with Joanna Lohman on a through ball that she put past goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer in the bottom corner of the net.
In the 75th minute, Seattle put the game away. Little picked up her second assist of the night, playing a through ball to a sliding Jess Fishlock, who pushed it past Wys for the final goal of the night.
On the defensive side, Kopmeyer made four saves in place of U.S Women's National Team goalkeeper Hope Solo, who is now training in preparation of June's FIFA Women's World Cup alongside forward Megan Rapinoe.
With the win, Seattle currently sits just one point out of first in the NWSL standings, trailing only the Chicago Red Stars and Portland Thorns FC.
Saturday's match was the first of two games between Seattle and Washington this season. The two sides will face off in their final regular season games on Saturday, September 5 at 5 p.m. at Maureen Hendricks Field at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
After the one-game home reprieve, Reign FC heads back out next weekend for its third road game in its last four matches. Sky Blue FC awaits Seattle on Saturday, May 9 at 4 p.m. (PT) at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J., before Reign FC returns home for two home games, starting with an international friendly against the Chinese Women's National Team on Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m.
