Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
JUPITER, FL- Reggie Abercrombie hit a walk-off solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning, lifting the Hammerheads past the Clearwater Threshers 3-2. The home run was Abercrombie's 10th on the season, putting him back in a tie for third among Florida State League home run leaders. Carlos Martinez (2-2) got the win after pitching the 11th for Jupiter, and Rik Currier fell to 1-1 after pitching the 10th and facing Abercrombie in the 11th.
Guillermo Mota started the game for the Hammerheads on a rehab assignment from the Florida Marlins. Mota pitched the first inning for Jupiter and looked solid, throwing 8 strikes and 3 balls while facing 3 batters. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 1. Tim Spooneybarger, another Marlins reliever on rehab with the Hammerheads, pitched the second inning. Spooneybarger threw 7 pitches, 3 for strikes, and allowed 1 hit. Jeff Gogal, who was originally scheduled to make the start today, came on in the third inning and pitched the next 5 and two-thirds, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits.
Clearwater got their two runs in the 5th on 3 singles, an RBI and a passed ball. Omar Bramasco knocked in Marc Tugwell for the only Thresher RBI on the night.
The Hammerheads began their rally in the bottom of the 7th. Angel Molina tripled to lead off the inning, but was thrown out on the next play when Juan Figueroa bounced into a fielder's choice. Clearwater first baseman Bryan Hansen elected to come home with the throw, and Molina was thrown out 3-2-5. Figueroa tried to reach second on the play and was thrown out 5-4. Kevin Randel followed with a double to right, followed by a Patrick Arlis RBI single to center.
In the bottom of the 9th, Reggie Abercrombie led off with a double to center, followed by an RBI single from Figueroa. The Hammerheads would put runners at the corners with one out, but fail to score any more runs in the inning.
With the score tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the 11th, Abercrombie stepped to the plate and launched a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall, securing the 5th straight win for the Hammerheads. The win marks the longest winning streak of the year for Jupiter, and they remain 3 games behind Vero Beach for the lead in the FSL East.
Jupiter and Clearwater will play game 2 of a 4 game series tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. on Knothole Gang Night at Roger Dean Stadium. Guillermo Mota is slated to make his second rehab start for the Hammerheads.
