Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

The Vero Beach Dodgers whalloped four home runs to defeat the Tampa Yankees 14-9 Friday night at Holman Stadium. Tony Abreu had one of the long bombs and went 5-5. Matt Kemp added a grand slam and a total of five RBI. Andy LaRoche stroked his team-high 12th home run to put him in second in the Florida State League. Justin Orenduff earned the win with five shutout innings in which he allowed no walks, two singles and struck out eight hitters. The series continues Saturday night at 7:00 PM. Julio Pimentel will get the start on Armed Forces Night. Anyone with a valid military ID will be admitted to the game for just $2.50.

Vero wasted no time getting on the board. Tony Abreu led off the first inning with a double and Xavier Paul walked. LaRoche singled home Abreu and Paul later scored on a fielder's choice to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead. Mike Nixon hit a solo homer in the 2nd to make it 3-0.

Meanwhile, Orenduff continued to baffle Florida State League hitters. He struck out the side in both the second and third inning. In fact, he fanned eight out of the first 10 batters he faced. In his last 17 innings, Orenduff has struck out 24, while allowing just eight hits, two walks and one run.

The Vero hit parade continued when Abreu led off the fifth with a home run. But it was the sixth inning that put the Dodgers in control. Matt Kemp started the inning with a double. One out later, five straight Dodgers reached base and made it 7-3. Cory Dunlap then walked with the bases loaded and Kemp followed with his grand slam to put the Dodgers ahead 12-3. Abreu doubled in Nixon in the 7th and LaRoche homered in the 8th to make it 14-3.

For the second straight night, the Yankees made a furious comeback in the 9th. Jared Koutnik hit a grand slam home run, while Ramiro Pena and Bryce Kartler added solo shots to pull the Yanks within five. But Justin Simmons came in to close the door and the Dodgers held on for the second win in two tries against Tampa.
