Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
For the second night, Vero Beach whacked four home runs to fly past the Yankees 8-1 at Holman Stadium. Both Matt Kemp and Andy LaRoche hammered two home runs - the 6th and 7th for Kemp and the 13th and league-leading 14th for LaRoche. Julio Pimentel earned the win to improve to 3-2. He allowed just one run in six innings, while walking no one and striking out three. Vero has taken the first three games and will try for the sweep Sunday at 1:00 PM. Brian Pilkington (0-2, 1.64) will try for his first win of the year.
Pimentel put the Yankees down in order in the top of the first inning. The Dodgers offense responded in the bottom of the first with the first home run of the night. It was a two-run shot by Kemp, following a base hit from LaRoche. Vero added another run in the second when Xavier Paul, who finished 2-4, singled and scored on a Mike Nixon double.
The defense helped Pimentel in the second when Paul threw out John Urick at home plate from left field to end the inning. The Dodgers also turned a 7th-inning double play and Tony Abreu make a terrific catch-and-throw at second base to end the 6th.
Meanwhile, the offense kept rolling. LaRoche hit his first home run in the third. Kemp followed with a double and came home on a delayed double steal with Anthony Raglani at first base. In the fourth, Chin-lung Hu doubled home Nixon. Kemp led off the fifth with his second homer of the night and LaRoche capped the scoring with a solo blast to left in the seventh.
