Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

VERO BEACH, FL (May 23, 2005) – Runs weren't hard to come by on Monday night at Holman Stadium and unfortunately for the Miracle they didn't get enough as they lost their sixth straight, 12-9 to the Vero Beach Dodgers.

The Miracle actually jumped out to a 6-1 lead after an inning and a half. Denard Span led off the game with a walk and scored when Taylor bunted for a single and Dodger pitcher Jason Figueroa threw the ball down the right field line. Taylor later scored on a sac fly from Justin Arneson.

After Andy Laroche homered for the Dodgers in the bottom of the first the Miracle scored four in the second. They sent 10 men to the plate and it all started with Scott Whitrock's solo homer, his sixth of the season. Ben Pattee added a two run single and Kyle Geiger walked with the bases loaded to force home a run.

That's when the wheels came off for the Miracle pitchers. The Dodgers scored in every inning, but the sixth and eighth. Miracle starter Scott Tyler lasted just three innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out one. The Dodgers took their first lead with a four run third after scoring two in the second. In the third Chin Lung Hu and Laroche hit back-to-back homers and the final two runs scored when Span dropped a ball in center.

The Miracle took an 8-7 in the fourth on a two run homer by Brock Peterson, his fifth of the season, but it was the last time the Miracle led.

The Dodgers responded with a run in the fourth on Laroche's sac fly and took the lead for good in the fifth on a solo homer by Justin Ruggiano. They added three runs in the eighth for good measure.

The Miracle sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth. After Felix Molina and Span walked JR Taylor drove in Molina with a single to right-center to make it 12-9. Pattee and Peterson, however, struck out to end the game.

Span was 2-3 with three walks and two runs scored, extending his hit streak to 10 games while Taylor was 3-4 with two walks an RBI and two runs scored.

The same two teams meet Tuesday night at Holman Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Adam Harben (2-4, 4.12) to the hill against Dodger RHP Danny Muegge (1-1, 3.73). The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 770 ESPN.
