RedWolves Lose Pitchers Duel, 1-0

June 8, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Florence RedWolves News Release

LEXINGTON, S.C.- On an extremely humid Monday night in Lexington, the (8-4) Florence RedWolves ventured down I-20 for the second time this season to take on the (4-7) Lexington County Blowfish. Pitching from both teams was stout, though the Blowfish were able to get the best of the RedWolves in the 8th, taking the 1-0 lead and holding on for the win.

Both the RedWolves and Lexington County's starting pitchers were on their game Monday night. Though he picked up the loss on the night; his first of the season, (1-1) Florence's, Brandon Cook (Francis Marion) had an excellent outing. Cook went into the eighth with one out before being pulled. On 114 pitches and working a hard 7.1 innings, the right-hander gave up one run on five hits, and two walks.

Taylor Widener (University of South Carolina) had a game for himself as well. The right-handed sophomore had it dialed in early and kept it there. Widener went six and two thirds, allowing no runs, five hits, no walks, and an astounding 13 strikeouts. The only pitfall on his night was being pulled in the 7th inning with the score still tied at zero, resulting in a no-decision.

The RedWolves' best chance to push a run across the plate came in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Matt Williams (University of South Carolina) reached first on an error by the second baseman, followed by back-to-back singles to center field from Josh Meyer (Grand Canyon University) and Drew Wharton (Clemson). Widener, with the bases loaded faced Shuler Ward and was able to record his 13th strikeout on the night before the Blowfish went to the bullpen. Lexington County went to the right-hander, Avery Greer (North Georgia). Coming in with the bases loaded, Greer was able to strikeout Adam Renwick (Clemson), getting the Blowfish out of the seventh inning jam.

In the bottom of the 8th, Lexington County got the only run needed for the win. With one out, Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) singled into right field. That is when Florence went to the bullpen for, Ivon Clough (Southern New Hampshire) to relieve Cook. Clough walked the first batter he faced, Jared Williams (University of South Carolina), putting runners on first and second for JD Crowe (Francis Marion). Crowe stroked one into right field, just far enough to score Duty from second. Even though Clough had the ball in hand, that run would be charged to Cook.

Greer picked up the win (1-1), going an inning and a third, no runs, no hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.

Lexington's, Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken) came in for his first save attempt in the ninth and was successful. He too recorded a strikeout, giving the Blowfish a total of 16 for the game. Again, Widener was accountable for 13 of those.

The Blowfish were able to hold onto the 1-0 lead, evening the season series at (2-2) between the two teams. Florence moves to (8-5) on the season while Lexington County improves to (5-7) ending their five game losing streak.

The rubber match of this three-game series will conclude tomorrow, June 9th, at Sparrow Stadium with first pitch being thrown at 7pm.
