Sharks Tally 12 Hits, Get Steamed in Edenton

June 8, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

The Edenton Steamers (9-2) picked up their sixth consecutive win by defeating the Wilmington Sharks (5-5) by a score of 13-3 on Monday night in Edenton. Wilmington tallied 12 hits on the night, their most of the season, but stranded 11 Sharks along the way. The Sharks had at least one hit in every inning.

Wilmington's bats were active early, initiated by Nick Rotola's double on the third pitch of the ballgame. Rotola would steal his first of two bases before Linkous singled to right in his first at-bat of the summer for the Sharks to score Rotola.

Edenton responded with two runs in the home half of the same inning, the result of two hits, a stolen base, and a wild pitch. Sharks starting pitcher Alex Hamilton (1-1) shoulders the loss after pitching 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs (7 earned) on five walks and seven hits - three of which were for extra bases.

The Steamers spread nine runs across the fourth and fifth to put the game out of reach, sending twenty batters to the plate. During this span, Edenton knocked nine hits, two of which were home runs out of Historic Hicks Field.

Wilmington scratched runs in the fifth and seventh, each innings where the Sharks were able to get the leadoff man on base. In the fifth, Rotola drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a Destino deep drive to right, and was knocked in by Foy. Rotola finished 3-4 with two stolen bases and a walk, scoring twice.

Steven Linkous led off the seventh with a walk and moved up to second on a Destino single. A wild pitch would move him up to third, where an error by the shortstop on a Stupienski hit ball would drive him in. Linkous finished the night 2-4 with a run and a stolen base. Jose Hernandez and Brett Smith each had multi-hit games as well.

The Sharks are back at home Tuesday night to host the Wilson Tobs for Taco Tuesday, where fans can enjoy $2 tacos from Moe's Southwest Grill, and wash them down with cold $2 Coronas and Modelos.
