Blowfish Win Pitcher's Duel
June 8, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Lexington County, S.C. (June 8, 2015) - J.D. Crowe (Francis Marion) slipped a base hit into right field, and Dalton Duty (University of Central Florida) scored. That was the only run scored in a wild pitcher's duel between the Lexington County Blowfish and the Florence RedWolves, as the Blowfish won on Monday night 1-0.
Taylor Widener (University of South Carolina) pitched an absolute gem for the Blowfish. He struck out a season-high 13 batters, totaling 27 strikeouts in the 2015 campaign.
The opening day starter struck out six in a win over Florence on May 26, and eight in a win over Holly Springs, the club's last win on June 1.
Widener struck out five of the first seven batters of the contest. He would surrender five hits. Two of them came in the largest challenge he and the Blowfish would face all night.
Matt Williams reached on an error in the top of the seventh inning. Josh Meyer and Drew Wharton reached on back-to-back singles to load the bases. Widener struck out Shuler Ward for his 13th and final victim of the night before giving way to relief pitcher Avery Greer (University of North Georgia).
Greer kept his 2015 season shimmering with a strikeout of Adam Renwick to end the largest threat of the night for the RedWolves, keeping the game scoreless going into the final stretch. Greer also pitched a scoreless eighth. That's when the Blowfish pounced.
Brandon Cook, who pitched well past the century mark for Florence, allowed a one-out single to Duty. Cook would balk and put Duty in scoring position, and walk Jared Williams (University of South Carolina).
Crowe took advantage of a 3-1 fastball, sending a base hit into right field to score Duty for the only run of the night. A chance for insurance runs was erased when reliever Ivon Clough forced Howard Joe (Mercer) into a double play to retire the side.
Trevor Bradley (USC-Aiken), in a sense, exorcised the demons of a night ago by picking up the save. Bradley struck out Wharton with a runner on first and two outs in the ninth to secure the victory.
These two teams will compete in the rubber match of the three-game swing at Florence on Tuesday, kicking off a four-game road trip. All games will be broadcast live on Z93.1 FM The Lake, and on the Blowfish Baseball mobile app.
The Blowfish will return home on Saturday, hosting the Forest City Owls at Lexington County Baseball Stadium for a 7:05 p.m. start. Tickets are now available for "Frozen Night, Part 2." Fans of all ages are encouraged to enjoy a spectacular musical tribute to the Disney movie Frozen, and enjoy a postgame fireworks show.
