Durham Bulls News Release

2008 National League All-Star Edison Volquez, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery with the Louisville Bats, will get the start tonight in Durham as the Bulls and Bats square off at 7:05 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Durham holds the best record in the International League with a 46-31 mark while the Bats reside in last place in the West Division at 36-42.

Volquez, acquired by the Reds following the 2007 season from Texas in exchange for Raleigh native Josh Hamilton, had his best season in 2008 when he was 17-6 with a 3.21 ERA and 206 strikeouts in 196 innings. He is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery performed in 2009 and making his fourth rehab start this evening. He has not issued a walk and has a 0.69 ERA in 13 minor league innings this season.

Louisville's bullpen features highly-touted Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman, the hard-thrower clocked as high as 102 mph. After auditioning for several teams, he signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds on January 11, 2010, worth $30.25 million over 6 years. The deal was comparable to the package offered by the Washington Nationals to Stephen Strasburg, the top pick in the 2009 amateur draft.
