Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo N.Y. - In the first of a two-game series against the Buffalo Bisons the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost by a score of 6-1. Erik Arnesen went 4 1/3 innings in the losing effort giving up four runs on nine hits. Jason Botts had the lone RBI for Syracuse with a sixth inning single.
Buffalo (40-39) broke over the .500 mark with the win on Tuesday night that started with three runs in the third inning. Lucas Duda, a replacement for Jason Pridie, swung at the first pitch of the third inning and took it deep to right for his third home run of the year. Duda had come on to replace Pridie who left after just one inning after feeling tightness in his right hamstring. Pridie has been activated off of the disabled list before the game. Mike Jacobs and Fernando Martinez added RBI groundouts to push the Buffalo lead to 3-0 after three.
The Herd added another run in the fifth inning when Jorge Padilla singled to lead off, and Mike Jacobs tacked on his second RBI of the evening with a double to right center. Syracuse (43-35) center fielder Boomer Whiting laid out for the ball but came up empty and the ball rolled to the fence allowing Padilla to score.
The Chiefs scored off of Bisons starter Dillon Gee in the sixth inning. Leonard Davis was hit by a pitch with one out, and Jason Botts provided a single two batters later to plate Davis and make it 4-1.
But in the seventh, after a leadoff walk by Fernando Martinez and a single by Mike Cervenak, catcher J.R. House used a two-run single to push the Buffalo lead to 6-1.
Syracuse used Jesse English, Ron Villone, and Collin Balester in relief. For English, it was his first appearance since going on the disabled list on May 25th. He pitched 1 1/3 innings walking two and striking out one.
In relief of Gee, Jose De La Torre and Manny Acosta each pitched one scoreless inning.
On Wednesday, the Bisons and Chiefs play their second and final game of this two game series. The starting pitchers will be Matt Chico (3-3, 3.50) for Syracuse and Tobi Stoner (3-7, 5.16) for Buffalo. First pitch will be at 1:05.
